Hornady 22 Mag 30 Gr. V-max
« on: April 11, 2008, 07:08:12 AM »
If you shoot a 22 mag at anything, even at paper, I would suggest you pick up a box of the new Hornady 22 Mag 30 grain V-max ammo. http://www.grafs.com/product/189601  I ordered a box of this a few weeks ago and had a chance to shoot it the other day. It was a nice calm day and at 100 yards, I was getting a very nice 1.25" group at 100 yards from a six shot group. (My Sportster 22 Mag with a Simmons 3-9x 50mm scope).  So, needless to say I was quite impressed. Hornady states on the box that the velocity of this bullet is 2250fps. I havn't ran it across my cronograph yet, but at some point this summer I'm sure I'll have a chance to do this.

I have been shooting the Winchester silver box "X" 40 grain ammo with good results, but it hasn't been giving me groups (consistent groups with no flyers) like this new 30 grain Hornady ammo. So, for me "the switch has been made". I re-dialed my scope in for the new ammo as the little 30 grain pill is shooting about 4" higher at 100 yards than the previous 40 grain Winchester bullet.

Give it a try if you have a chance. Your gun may like it.

I picked up a .22 Mag Ultra of 2007 vintage, along with a box of the Hornady V-Max ammo this afternoon  Glad to know that should work out to be a good match.
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.

GPR,

Give a report when you shoot it. I'd like to hear your results.

My Marlin hates them. Got a brick of them for the last PD shoot and they were so inaccurate in it they weren't even adequate to hit a PD at 50 yards. Some guns will like them and some won't. Sadly mine didn't.

Yeah. My guess would be it's like any other 22 ammo. Some like it and some don't. That's too bad 'cause that V-max bullet is really doin a good job on these Pennsylvania groundhogs.

Hornady states 2,200fps not 2250fps! I chronoed it in my 24" barrel ruger VMBZ and got 2,300+fps out of them and right at 2,200fps out of my 20" Ruger they are the best made most accurate load in 22 magnum on the market right now just call Cooper arms and ask them. Marlin 22 magnums are good little rifle in 22 mag but hit or miss on real good accuracy!

I have my gun sighted in with the same ammo.  It's a proven combo for me too.  I have a Leupold 3-9x40 on top.

Drop,

I'm confused as to why you are paying $48 for 3 boxes of this when http://www.grafs.com/product/189601 Grafts has it for $11.39 a box including shipping plus a $4.50 handling fee. So, if I do the math, 3 boxes would cost $38.67 if you order it over the internet.

The only 30 grain I've shot has been the Federal hollow point.  It shot better then I thought it would but I still get a better group with the 40 grain Winchesters though.
