Pulling Apart Black Powder Cartridges
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:15:06 AM »
Have some 460 S&W Magnums loaded with Pyrodex RS. Tried pulling one apart last night to salvage the brass and lead. The RS was packed in so tight that I had to take a screwdriver and dig it out. After the first one I thought; Will this thing blow up in my hand?
Never fooled with loading Pyrodex enough to know how dangerous it may be. Is this safe to do?

Don't work by candle light or smoke and you will be fine.
safety glasses are a good idea any time you are working with live primers

I'd be pretty carful with the Pyrodex. Seems I read somewhere, other than on the "Net", that Pyrodex shouldn't be compressed too much.

The best place to ask would be Hodgdon. ;)

Don't use anything steel to dig in Pyrodex or any black powder or substitute. They can be primary explosives and may detonate with impact.
I had a cartridge blow up on me - it felt like my hand was gone. I only suffered minor burns and a long but shallow cut. It was not an experience I would wish on anyone!

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.

What Paul said about metal and digging into Black powder or substitutes. Use a wood or plastic pick.
