Comparing velocities out of different barrels is frought with error. Even two different barrels of the same length will give different velocities - how do you know if the velocity difference between different length barrels is due to the length difference or to the normal difference? To know for certain you must cut off the same barrel into different lengths and chronograph loads.
From G&A 9/1987 with the .308, a 180 grain bullet and IMR4302 powder:
Length.....velocity
24"...........2700 fps
22"...........2660
20"...........2620
18.5"........2575
16"...........2480
G&A 7/1989., .308 and 165-grain Hornady factory load:
Length......velocity
22"............2674 fps
20"............2617
18.5".........2598
The average velocity loss from a 22" barrel to an 18.5" barrel was 81 fps.
