7MM-08 boolet choice
« on: June 15, 2008, 03:29:59 AM »
I been a true fan of the Hornady 165 SP for the last 40 years plus in my -06 and say I never had a deeer take a few steps after the shot.
I was thinking in the 139  SP grain for the 7MM-08 or what came to mind is the 130 grain speer hot core:I never used speer bullets but they do come with a high BC and still priced right
I had luck this past year with the 165 remingtons in the 06 shot ad good as the hornady too bad there price is on the same line as the hornady

I was always in favor of the 140 grain bullet in 7-08 so I think the 139 grain would be better then the 130 for deer.  Probably an excellant choice.

The only two bullets I've used to any extent in the 7-08 are the Hornady 139 Interlock and the Nosler 140 BT. I've used a fair bit of factory ammo from Remington with their 140 Core-loct as well. Now that both Nosler and Hornady are making the bonded core bullets I expect to be trying those from both companies in our 7-08s.

I also wonder how BTSP will do on deer under 100 yards Northeastern deer hunting style ?
I know the boat tail have less drag and come in higher BC for long distance shooting and hunting; I never tried them over the years but I read more and more they will get the job done on whitetails

I used the 130 grn Speer in a 7x57 for a number of years, killed about 20 deer, and never had one take more than 5 steps before going down.   Most of them dropped in their tracks at ranges from 50 yards up to 200 yards.  It gave me a little more velocity and seems to perform very well.

I am a big fan of the Nosler Ballistic Tips, they are available in either 120 ,140 or 150.I have used the 120 with most one shot hits and no movement at all.   Doug

I am a Speer fan myself, the Hot Cor's work for me and are good in price. That doesn't mean I wouldn't switch to another brand if I can't get the Speer to group well. The Noslers are too pricey for me.

I've used 139 Hornady for years, have some of the 140 Accubonds to try on game.  They group very well from all 3 of my 7mm08's  Haven't tryed the Speer 130's, but since 130 has worked so well for the 270, (.277") It should work just fine for the .284" bore as well.  I laid in a large supply of 139's 12-15 years ago and still have a few boxes of them so haven't done alot of workup on to many others.  DP.

I have successfully used all sorts of 140gr and the 139gr Interlock in the 7mm-08AI. The latest super performer I used last fall is the 140gr Accubond it is also very accurate. I used this bullet in a Ruger #1 in7x57. The semi pointed
Rem 175gr is a great bullet for big game. The well made 139gr Interlock will take deer moose and elk without much fuzz with a wellplaced shot.
