Rechamber the 357

What can you rechamber the 357mag Handi barrel to other than the 357max?

I may go with the 35 Rem, 356 Win or 358 Win. What are the pro and cons?

Seriously, kenbev, I've done the .356 Win and it's pretty good. Brass is sometimes hard to find and the reamer may be also. I did mine with a combination of 2 reamers from 4-D, a .30-30 and a .358.
 If I had to do it again, I'd go with the .358.
Also, the twist is a little slow for 250 grain bullets, although some guys have no problem with them, My .356 works with the Speer 220.

I think the story of yours and Tims 35 Rem. would make a great bed time story. :D     Since it's bedtime,tell me all about it so visions of cast bullets can dance thru my head.  Really would like to hear more on that conversion.  Tryed the search and get to much other stuff in there, How is the best way to narrow the search down?  Seems like the more I put in to narrow it down, the more other stuff I get.  Still a good feature, I just get impatient. ::)   Anyway, if it hasn't been beat to death, how about some talk on the 35 Rem?  DP.

Mike Bellm did me a rechamber of a 357 Magnum Handi barrel last year to the rimmed version of the .35 Remington - works fantastic with the 158 gr, 180 gr, 200 gr and 220 gr. I've tired heavier bullets up to 290 gr - but the cutoff for my barrel seems to be right at 225 gr with the 357 Mag's factory twist.

He also did me one to .357 Max with the non-SAMMI standard throat - that thing makes small clover leafs all day with 158s and 180s.

Since I already have a .35 Whelen I don't feel the need for the .356 ..... but, I am going for the AI version of the factory Whelen barrel as 'next on my list'.

The rimmed '.35 Rem' is nothing but a .303 Brit or 3.0-40 Krag case shortened to .35 Rem length and formed to 35 Rem profile, then fire-formed to finish. What you end up with is a rimmed .35 cal case that's essentially identical to the .35 Rem - but with a rim for easier extraction and eliminates any headspacing issues on the shoulder since you now have a rim to work with. It is easy to work up loads that come close to/at the .356 or .358 with the right powder and still stay under the nominal 55-60k pressure limit for the Handi frame. I am finding the the formed ex-303 Brit brass seems to be holding up nicely, even with near-magnum loads. I have only formed a total of 40 cases so far - but each of them has had twelve trips to the range and look like new.

Don't forget the 357/44 Bain & Davis. A 44 Magnun necked down to .357, if you like it in your handi you can have a Ruger Blackhawk (357/9mm Convertible) re-chambered to the same Wildcat and have an kick ass combo!
