Morning Trapper J.

Can't say which is best , but can say I had a 10" bull that would shoot dime size groups at 25 yards.  That had a 2X scope on it at the time.  I killed  a few squirrels and a groundhawg with it.  I loaded it with either 40 or 45 grain Sierra spitzers over IMR 4227 , I think , its been a few years ago.  The hawg was only 30 yards or so away...instant kill, through upper ribs into the opposite neck area.  The 10" was nice to carry......and for the distances I was shooting, it was good for me.  Enough of that ,  I believe we're neighbors ???  Bottom Rd. ring a bell ??    Good luck with your Contender , IROLD

It would help if you stated what you intend to do with it ? A 10" or 12" will be the easiest to find and with good hand loads will shoot 1" at 100 yds.

Thanks guys

WayneS
Planning on more carrying than benching this one.   I like to do some daytime fox hunting and figure this would be the ticket, lots of walking.  I am leaning more toward 12".  Hoping to find someone to trade my 204 barrel.

Check here  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php?topic=146385.0 I know it's not a Hornet, but the 222 gives more flexabality with reloading. just a thought  ;D

I second the 222 barrel . Also would look at the 221 f ball if it would be under 12 inches. I have all three 222 in 24 inch savage and a 16 inch tc contender . a 221 fireball in savage 24 inch and a 22 hornet on a handi rifle . All shoot good enough to hunt with . The contender in 222 is surprising in accuracy. , it wears a 10 x burris and will shoot dime size groups at 100 yards. Most hover a little over 3/4 inch for the full 5 shot group , but 3 or 4 will be impressive most times.

The .22 Hornet is all you need for fox. As for barrel lenth it really don`t matter much. I would recomand you go with what you can find the most reasonablely priced. There is nothing wrong with the others named, but the only advantage to them is that they will shoot alittle flatter which probly don`t matter anyway as the Hornet will do a good job on fox out to abt 200 yrds. and you probly won`t be shooting any farther than that. Besides the Hornet doesn`t make as much noise.
