This is my "new" 44 hunting handgun
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:49:22 PM »
I bought this a few days ago. It's a 1969 OM Ruger in 44 magnum.  Will the old scope be OK to use or should it be replaced with something newer?

TR - Oh man, that's a beauty.  Whazzat thing sittin' on top????  I used one of those just eggs-ackly like that for years for piggies, bambi, couple of bruin, one turkey (sandwich snack when I was all through with it) and lots and lots of silly-wets.

The scope just needs you to try it out and see if it holds zero from recoil.

I favor the double action of the S&W but there are many times when I wish I still had my old SBH.  Mikey.

Nice looking fun....I take it that it is an old style without the transfer  bar safety so you can't carry a live round under the hammer... Ruger will upgrade it for free if your interested....

It is a beauty for sure...I noted the Square Back design on the trigger guard, It does not appear to be quite as radical as the swept back point on my New Model and appears to allow a little more finger room. I put an ugly Hoge mono on mine and a scope is in consideration for my late season hunting.

You got a very nice find there, and will handle all your handgun hunting needs as well.

Who knows how well that Bushnell Phantom will hold up ? Shoot it awhile and see. Don't just replace it because it's "old". If it holds zero for a couple hundred rounds, you're probably in good shape. Just be sure the screws are tight before or after each shooting session. Be aware though, that there's a reason you don't see rail mount scopes much these days.

You might want some optics that are a little smaller, doesn't hang out over the grip as much, and lower to the frame.

The Ultra Dots are great in my opinion.  You have a good field of view,(30mm vs 1"), and they are quick to get on target.  I particulary like the Ultradot 4 because you can change dot size.  Large for up close and personal, and smaller for farther away.

Looks pretty nice...How is the eye relief on that scope?  I've seen them listed on E-Bay quite often and I wondered about them...Let us know how it works out for you.

Nice iron! Scope can be used for proactice and hunting, (after you check it out practicing).
Looks great.
crabo, not all Ultra's are 30mm unless they have changed.
