Quickd2, Need Help W/ .30-30 Cowboy Barrel!

I thought I saw something from you on having Marlin put a .30-30 Cowboy barrel on a 336.  I am seriously thinking about that, but their site says they don't do custom work.  What's the scoop?

Here's the answer I got from Marlin.

We do them everyday. All new parts forward of the receiver is about $307.00. Person should call 1-800-544-8892 and ask for Joanne. It is referred to as a cowboy conversion.

I'm considering a Marlin in 30/30 for Cowboy Silhouette.

Is there an advantage with the cowboy barrel (I assume that would be the octagonal one) or is it a matter of aesthetics?

Well, I did it.  My model 336 went out to Marlin yesterday for the "Cowboy Conversion" and I am already having second thoughts, mostly because my baby is out of my reach.  It will be interesting to see what I get back, if it will have the full length magazine or the shorter one like the old model 336A had. 

The longer sight plane should make it easier to shoot accurately, and I hope to be able to wring a little more speed out of the bullets compared to the 20" barrel.  At any rate, I asked to have the old parts returned in case I decide I really liked the original configuration better.  We'll see.

My 336 came home yesterday, looking mighty nice!  24" octagonal barrel in .30-30.  I am not enamoured with the sights.  The rear has the cheap sheet metal elevator, and the front is a bead.  I have a couple of Lyman globe front sights, I may put one of those on.  Since the original parts came back earlier, I will see if the old rear sight (a Marble's) will work.  That has the blade which folds out of the way so it doesn't interfere with the peep rear.  Now I need to get out and see what she will do!

Then I need to send it in and get the Gunkote finish applied so the barrel matches the receiver, but overall it is very pretty.
