IMR 7383 data?
« on: July 24, 2003, 10:09:39 AM »
I am told that IMR 7383 is very similar in burning rate to 4350 but much bulkier. I am tempted to apply this by using a case full of 7383 anywhere the weight of such charge is the same or reasonably less than 4350 charges for the same case and bullet.

If anyone has actual data or a better approach, please let me know. I'm planning to start with 120 grain bullets in a .25-06, but I'll wait a week or two for answers to come in first.

new powder data

My simple advice is DON;T DO IT!!!!

Reloading ammunition can be risky enough without using word-of-mouth reloading data from someone that says one powder is "similar" to another powder.

I belive that IMR 7831 is a military 20mm and .50 cal BMG powder, as was surplus 4831 a couple generations ago.

The problem with playing with initial powder charges using new or  unknown powders is that in high-intensity cartridges (including the .25-06), such charges can actually be greatly reduced charges and lead to secondary explosion phenomenon.  You certainly don't want to blow up a good rifle or hurt yourself, do you?

Wait for RELIABLE loading data before you fill that first case!  Try contacting the manufacturer, or research the Web for loading data.

That would be the safe way to start loading a new powder.

Chill, John.

I have only been using surplus powders 30 years or so. Ain't blown up nothing yet and ain't likely to.

And what part of "case full" did you not undertand?

Been looking and found that some folks say the burning rate is more like 4064.

Come to think of it, I was one of the ones using H4831 what John thinks of as a couple of generations ago. Bought it in a paper bag the local dealer filled from a bulk keg in the back. I was shooting a Mauser 98 in 7x57 amd the loading instructions were "Fill the case to the bottom of the neck and use a 140 grain bullet."

Worked good, too.
