Savage Mark II F possible stock problem?
« on: July 20, 2008, 12:57:38 PM »
During my numerous stock removalls, my groups now are terrible! I checked inside the stock and noticed that where the rear action stud makes contact with the stock, has cut down into it which appears to have raised the front of the barrel up much more than when I first got the rifle had it less than a month. All I can figure is since the rear stud sunk into the stock this must have caused a see-saw type movement which raised the front portion of the barrel considerably the bottom edge of the barrel is barely below the top edge of the forearm much larger gap now. are my groups now suffering due to a stress problem? This is a cheap synthetic factory stock. I have part of a Miles Gilbert stock bedding kit left is it possible that I could maybe use a drill bit larger than the bolt, and drill down into the stock slightly fill this hole with bedding compound, grind down flush with stock when it sets up drill hole for bolt and cure this problem? I wish I had the skills to just fully bed the action but wouldn't know where to start. I also have JB WELD on hand if that would work. I hope this is what's causing the spreading groups and can be fixed cause this little gun gave my CZ452 Varmint a run far the money as far as group sizes. I'm open to any and all suggestions  Thanks! PS. I went as high as 25"lbs on the torques.

I would buy a better quality stock for that gun. The factory Savage stocks are pretty bad. That's how they keep costs down. I bought Bell and Carlson synthetic stocks for my two savages and they improved the performance and looks of both the rifles.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I have not tried modifying the stock on the Mark II, but I have on pretty much every other rifle that I own.  Go figure.  Anyway, the stock is very weak like Val said.  Savage sells replacement wood ones if I remember right.  Looked at getting one at one point.

The rifle is a serious shooter.  I couldn't believe how accurate mine was.  Was just looking for a training rifle because components are so expensive for reloading.

Anyway, there is also a shimming trick that you can do to the trigger group if you are competent and confident of your abilities.  I can pm the link to you if interested.

Otherwise, junk the stock.  It isn't worth the time to try to fix it.  That isn't what you want to hear, but how much is your time worth?
