Mouth calls for calling coons
« on: December 27, 2008, 06:21:27 PM »
I am interested to know if anyone has had any experience calling coons with mouth calls?  I do not have an electronic caller never really felt the need for coyote, fox, etc. but I have been reading these exciting stories about turning the coons on with coon fight sounds can this be done with mouth call? Brand name? Thanks, Joe

Back when I made custom calls I made coon calls with special reeds.   But it can be done with just about any enclosed reed rabbit, fawn, etc distress call.   Those with a louder double reed tuned raspy work best.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I've heard that that can be pretty scary to do , they say they will come in ready to tear you up,and you wont even hear'em comin at ya. Sounds pretty intense, not for the faint at heart.

I have had some luck imitating a coon fight with a sceery rabbit call.  I will say this.....it's tiring on the mouth!!  For me, I push alot of air through the call to get my desired effect and I will do it for a while.  Sometimes up to a couple of minutes at a time.  I prefer to use e-callers.  The speaker is further away from you too.  I have had coons come charging in snarling and screaming at you.  It can be quite intense!!!  One very cheap way to e-call coons.  Get a Johnny Stewart coon fight tape or CD, throw it into a boom box, head out to the calling area, and push play.  You will get some customers if ther are coons in the area.  I have also played my e-caller constantly on med volume while slowly walking tree lines scanning the top with lights.
It's all a hot mess...........

I have had coons come to sqeakers and dying rabbit calls while in a tree stand in the daylight. It was surprising .
