I think the majority of guys stop at 165 for the 308.  I have had very good success and very good accuracy with Reloader 15.

for 150 grain I have had good luck with 43gr H380 and 44gr Varget.  Never shot anything over 155 gr.

Thumbcocker:  I once owned a Remington 788 in 308 that would only shoot 308 accuracy loads accurately.  Most factory 180 gn 308s would only give me minute of index card at 100 yds and I wasn't satisfied with that and wanted smaller groups.  The best load I could come up with for that particular rifle was with the old 180 gn rn Hornady slug over 41 gn of 4895 for about 2480'/sec.  HTH.  Mikey.

One of the most accurate loads out of my .308 LTR is the 180gr Hornady SP over 44.2gr of Varget (safe in my rifle) with a C.O.L. of 2.80. It is a consistant sub-moa load.

My best load out of my 24 inch barreled 308 using 180 gr. bullets is 47.0 grains of AA4350, Winchester cases, ccI200 primer. The bullet I liked best was the 180grain SST from Hornady. This load probably wasn't the fastest possible but I got 2500fps out of it. What I reallly liked was the consistant 3/4 inch groups it gave in my rifle. Work up to this one but the manual says you can go to 50 grains of regular IMR4350.

I tried two handloads with 4064 and 180 gr. speer roundnose bullets. 42 grs. shot into 1 1/2. 43 grs. shot an 1 1/4. Both would be totally acceptable for hunting. Remington 180 gr. pointed and roundnose factory loads will both shoot into a little less than a nickle. Federal fusions 180 gr. factory load will cut the same hole. I have my work cut out for trying to best those factory loads.

Best load I had for my Ruger early model, was 165 Hornady over a max charge of W748.  3 shots at 100 yds completely covered with a dime and room for more.  Check Hornady to see how much W748 they recommend.  DP.

Hi All,

I found this mild load to work:-

Sierra 180 Grain Pro Hunter #2150 over 42.0 grains of Reloader 15 using  Fed 210 primers and a COL of 2.800" cases were OFV (Indian Milsurp I believe) but I have used the same load in a Winchester case with equally good results on the target. Rifle is a Brno ZKK 601 std.

I've had good success with 180 SST over 45gr Varget, COL 2.875, gives 0.60" groups.

Also I use 165gr SST's and IB's over 43gr of IMR4895 at COL 2.89 for sub-moa groups.

Winchester cases and 210M primers.

180's are all I shoot out of .308. I have a savage 99, I shoot the sierra gameking 180 in front of H4895
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

I have a Browning a-bolt Medalian that absolutely loves Federal 180 grain soft points. When shooting slow to keep barrel heat low, it will shot 5 shot groups at 100 yards that can be completely covered with a dime.

I use to shoot 150's but I have switched to Nosler Partition 180's for good.  Seem to perform great and I get much better accuracy from them.  I use my 308 in the thick woods though, I never get a long shot.
