Franchi 48AL??
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:58:03 AM »
Any experiences, good or bad, with a Franchi 48AL??

Looking at one in a 20ga and seems like a nice little gun.

Thank you!

I had one in 28ga for a while a few years ago. It was a wonderful gun to carry and pointed well. Only problem I had with it was with 3/4 oz loads it was a single shot. With 1oz loads it cycled fine. It was so light that it kicked hard with the heavier loads so I sent it down the road. Regards, Byron

Not an expert by any means, but I have a friend who loves Franchi's and he says that you have to hold them tight to your shoulder or else they're subject to jamming.

I've had two 48ALs.  I bought a 28ga last year at the beginning of the season.  It was a beautiful gun, lightweight (which is why I bought it), and a dream to carry. But from the very first it never fed shells properly so it was a very expensive single shot.  I tried different shells/loads, tried adjusting the friction ring, and anything else I could think of.  I finally returned it, through the dealer, to Franchi in Accokeek, MD for warranty repair.  Seven months later, the dealer finally gave up trying to get it back for me (Franchi reportedly claimed they couldn't find it) so he gave me a new one instead.  I was a little skeptical of getting another one, based on my experience with the first, but almost everything I've read about 48ALs indicates they're usually solid, reliable guns.  And so far the new one has worked flawlessly with three brands of shells (3/4 oz Fed and Rem and 1 oz Win) in controlled conditions at a target range.  I hope it works as well in the field this fall.

And since the gun is so light, it does have a bit of a kick.  Nothing too bad, though.

I owned a pair of Franchi 48AL's in the mid '70's; one a 12ga and the other in a 20ga. They worked just like "lightweight" Browning A-5's and were just as reliable. One thing you have to get used to, is the tendency to "overswing" on game because of their "ultra lightweight" frames. After a couple of years, I sold them as a "pair". I should have kept the 20ga, but I don't regret selling the much harder "kicking" 12 at all. I've recently thought of purchasing one in a 28ga, but I'm disappointed to hear about their feeding problems and hope it is just an "anomaly".
