tested loads for steyr 6.5x55 for fullbore silhouette

Hi There,

I am new to fullbore and want to take part in world champs this year in Finland.

Has anyone got a steyr 6.5x55 or similar calibre that they use for fullbore silhouettes.  If so what typre of loads do you use bullet make/ model, bullet weight, powder charge, powder type etc. 

I have a few rounds of 142grain scenar bullets made up and not yet tested.  I was thinking is this bullet weight strong enough to know down Rams at 500? Is there a sweet spot on the Ram that I should aim for to guarantee a falling target.

I load for a .260 rem. my c,p,t, loads are 107gr SMK at about 2600fps and my ram load is 142gr SMK at about 2500fps. The ram load takes the rams down very well no matter where they are hit. Hope this helps.

drags thanks for the info.  I am thinking on keeping the load at 142g for all animals...maybe i will hit a few anyhow and perhaps the shoulder might not appreciate it the next day but what do you think am i crazy?

Maver, you can try the 142 gr bullets for all animals and if recoil is to much you can always go to the lighter bullets for the c,p,t. Recoil is not to bad in the .260 with the 142 gr. bullet, but I never fired a 6.5x55  so I wouldn't know how the recoil is.

I got to shoot a friends blaser 6.5x55 out to 100M last weekend all off hand shooting with 142gr and 140grrounds and found it exceptional too shoot.  Recoil was minimal from what I had imagined it to be and my shoulder held up pretty well after about 80 rounds.  I could have shot that gun all day if i had more loads...can't wait to get to shoot out to 500 in Finland.

Hi,

Following on from the 6.5x55 and fullbore sils shooting, is there any type of bullet that is not allowed to be shot at the sils incase of damage to them?  I am thinking on loading the Scenar HPBT (Hollow Point Boat Tail) 42g and was wondering if this bullet is ok for the highpower sils shooting.

In addition to my other posts.  Do you think the 139g scenar HPBT in 6.5x55 will have enough juice to knock over RAMS at 500M.  On the chrono that bullet registered with 2300 either f/ps or m/ps.
