Hello Everyone!
Wildboar is a major game in my country. No need to say how many of them i've shot.
Lots of limitations here, especially on the bullet/ammo choices. Almost of us use a .30cal (.308 or 30.06), except for .223 or other calibers for this "ugly" game. Many of us using mil surplus ammo (FMJ bullet) for hunting...i know this wasn't good...but in our conditions?.
I myself used FMJ, "hollow point"/"flat nose" ("modify" from an fmj pills ), "real"HPBT, and sometimes with Sierra Soft Point or Barnes X.
It's from a .22lr, 22H, .223, .243, 25.06, 7.62x39, 7x57JRS,.308, .06, 8x57JS, .416Rigby and 12GA (both slug and buckshot).
We ussualy night hunt using spotlights or in moonlight. Not much in daylight hunting. We hunt by 4wheeler/jeep (with a special flat base construction on top of it) in "a team" (3-5persons, 1driver, 1-2"spotlighters/guides", 1-2shooters) in dark condition (no moon)...and "stay hunting" (on a treestand or so) in a fullmoon night.
The spotlighters (as also as the "guides") "search" the games by heavy spotlights...in a "variable" field condition (sometimes "flat/open area", but most "brushy area")...we should have "eagle eyes" for this. To find their "bright red eyes" is easy, but it is not for their bodies/butts!. Don't say we have many kind of animals with many kind of "different eyes" here.... Can you "judge: What game is that?" in 200-300meters range in seconds? It is easy in short range, say under 100m, but it's really not in "long range".
The shooter also must "judge the trigger" fastly, sometimes very fast since we have no much time. The driver also must have "enough skill" to make the shooter in a "good angle", especially in brushy area. (remember we're on top of the jeep). This can be done by "code" of the spotlighter (back/forward). That's why we need a good team.
"Stay hunting" in a fullmoon is more easy i think. It's all depend on the shooter and the "guide". "Sharp ear and eyes" is a must, too. Sometimes i bring/use my NightVision for this (helpful in brushy area or many high trees around the "spot" field).
When we knew there was game(s) overthere, we still (mostly) use battery spotlight to make it "brighter" so the shooter can shoot more accurate.
I myself like ear/eye/head shot (depend on the "view" and condition/range). From hundreds of shots, not more than 10 shots i've ever missed and more than 50% headshot!.
According to my experience, even a 22lr can make them dropped/killed in seconds (eye/ear shot-whatever they weigh/big!). Honestly, "no rules" here about the caliber must used. .
But i will say that i more "confident" with my .30cal....
For eye/ear shots, you won't need "special" bullet/caliber for this, that's for sure!....Don't tell my Mom, please...even i've shot them ("middle weight") twice with my air rifle (i built it myself-oxygen 3000psi)-, and their sculls are on my cupboard now....
"Ethically" or Not???, i don't know....but it's very rare i didn't dropped them in seconds.
Best Regards,
Sebastian.
