I'M THINKING OF GETTING A REMINGTON 1100 CANTILEVER RIFLED BARREL FOR DEER HUNTING NEXT DEER SEASON.... ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS PARTICULAR GUN ???  GOOD ?? EXCELLENT ?? NOT WORTH  IT ???

1100 Cantilever

One of my deer guns is an 1100 with a cantilever fully rifled barrel.  That highlights the first question you need to answer on cantilever barrels.  Do you want a smooth bore with RemChokes (including rifled), or the fully rifled one?  The smooth bore barrels have the advantage for being ideal for turkey, particularly with special extended turkey chokes.  For rifled chokes, I've found the extended rifled choke to be generally a little bit more accurate than the original flush rifled choke, at least with the Fiocchi slugs I found on sale.  I'm getting about 2" groups at 50 yards, and that is about as far as I would shoot them.  At 100 yards, these full bore slugs open up to large groups.

For the fully rifled barrel I use Federal sabot slugs, and get about 3" groups at 100 yards.  This slug is .50 inches after the sabot falls away, and has a flatter trajectory.

I have both 2 3/4 inch chamber and 3 inch chamber barrels, and found the 3 inch barrel offers no advantage.  My Federal sabot slugs generally pass completely through deer, so a 3 inch slug would only do it faster.  The 3 inch chamber may offer an advantage for turkey, but with HeviShot, that advantage is negated.

My barrels sport Leupold 1X4 Shotgun scopes.  The power range is right, and I particularly like the heavy Duplex reticle.

I just bought a browning gold slug gun,with a cantilever barrel.These guns seem to be high quality guns. I mounted a burris signature Electro- dot 1.5X6 on it Great shooter at 100 yards.When I bought the gun, browning was offering $100 rebates.I bought the gun for $769.

Big, I see them on eBay and Gunbroker.com.  That is where I got my last 11-87 smoothbore cantilever barrel.  I got it as a backup deer and turkey barrel, but my county has just approved muzzleloaders during the shotgun deer season so that will serve as my backup.  You might talk me out of the 11-87 barrel if you can't find one anywhere else.

1100 slug barrel

One caution - if your 1100 is an older one - The new barrel may not fit exactly the same.  They changed the barrel hanger loop and the for eend protector  on newer vs older guns.  If your 1100 is a newer one go for it.  I know many who use the set up in So tier NY successfully - enjoy stv

WELP !!!!!!!!! WENT TODAY AND ORDERED THE REM. 1100 CANTILEVER GUN..... I'M STILL TRYING TO DECIDE ON THE SCOPE...... OR  THE RED DOT SCOPE......ANYONE HAVE A PREVERENCE ?? ONE OVER THE OTHER....MY SHOTS WILL NOT BE OVER A 100 YARDS....

WELL I DECIDED TO PUT THE LEUPOLD VX11  2 - 7 X 33 SHOTGUN SCOPE ON THE 1100

Shotgun Scope

My favorite scope on my deer shotguns is the Leupold 1X4 Shotgun scope.  I like the matte finish, and I particularly like the heavy reticle.  It does well in low light woods for the deer that wanders by my stand two minutes after legal time to shoot.  I find the light dim enough that I have trouble seeing the fine crosshairs of a regular scope.  The Leupold SG scopes are also parallax corrected at a shorter range than their regular rifle scopes.  The 1X setting works for running, close range shots.  The 4X setting is all I need out to 100 yards.

Yes, there is a 2X7 version of the Leupold SG series, but  when would you need 7X for a slug gun?  Why pay for the additional magnification?  Now if you were putting the scope on an inline muzzleloader, firing three 50-grain Pyrodex pellets, you might want that much.

Yes sir i see your point.....i was thinking of putting the scope on my TC OMEGA  ML   for ML season......just have to resight it each time i change it to guns....but after ml season i have almost a year to get it ready on the shotgun again....... thanks for your input.......

Now, if you get yourself a scope collimator you'd be all set. First you use it to setup your scope so you are on paper with the first shot.  Then, after sighting you rifle/shotgun in and getting a good zero, put the collimator in and record your reading.  When swapping the scope firearm to firearm (each of which you previously zero'd and recorded your collimator reading) you'll have an initial reading to set your crosshairs to that should get you within 2-3" of zero (at 100 yards), frequently closer.  Additionally, you can check your zero with the collimator to see if the rifle remained zero'd after a bump or after travel.  I use a Bushnell collimator that comes with three adjustable spuds that covers .22 to .45+, then got a combination spud for .50 cal and 12 ga.

OK GANG......Please bare with me on this,,this is my first scoped gun..sighted it in at 50yards first ,,a little high but hitting middle of target,,moved to 100yds first 4 shots reasonably middle of target sort of right and still high,,adjusted scope next 4 shots were reasonably good....Next 4 shots high right,,,next 4 shots would be a close to those last 4 shots,,,adjusted scope again,,next 4 shots ,well let me put it this way the shots the rest of the day would group good but never to the middle of target,,,,i marked the scope to make sure it wasn't moving and from what i can tell it didn't... The gun was on a bench and gun rest and sandbags,,Now my first thinking was it was me and very well could be,,but had another person shoot it at different times and would do the same for him,,,, Any help would be appreciated.....thanks :?  :?

Sounds as though your scope or mounts are moving.  Is this a recent scope purchase, have you just put the scope on the gun?  Is the new cantilevered barrel mounted securely? Are you using all the same factory ammo for the day?

Here's what I would do......After checking all the mount screws for tightness, set the scope at the highest mag setting, and take 3-5 shots at  50 yds.  If they group OK, just turn down the mag setting to the lowest setting on the scope and repeat 3-5 shots again at the same target.  How do they compare?  If they look good, move the target out to 100 yds. and repeat the same routine.

If you discover the groups are shifting, you want to try changing the windage and elevation settings to see if they are tracking.  Adjust 4-clicks to the right, shoot.  4-clicks down, shoot.  4-clicks to the left shoot,  4-clicks up, shoot.  You should be back on the BULL.  If not, there's a problem with the scope.

Final issue, Make sure you are cleaning the barrel during all this slug shooting.  I've experienced leading after only 5 rounds with my smooth bore barrel.  Keep it clean between shots!

OK......FINALLY...I SAY FINALLY...MADE IT TO THE SHOOTING RANGE AGAIN TO TRY TO GET MY REM. 1100 WITH SCOPE SIGHTED IN....TOOK SOME ADJUSTING ON THE SCOPE BUT NOW IT IS GROUPING 2 IN. GROUPS AT 100 YARDS....I CONSIDER THAT GOOD ENOUGH......
