« on: March 18, 2007, 09:01:28 PM »
I have accumulated most everything I think I'll need for this years Alaskan moose hunt. It's a small party doing it ourselves, no guides or outfitters. Figguring/planning as if it's 14 days, but will likely be a 10-12 day hunt. My gear list is pretty much 95% complete, but I thought I'd throw this out for discusion for fun to see if anyone wants to add imput or other comments/recomendations.

I'd sure want one pair of wool pants along and have a wind-water proof shell along that fits over them.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

Sounds like a good trip!! I would add  mole skin (blisters)  motrin( Aches ) superglue( Largecuts)  Needle & thread  . My favorate  take a short pencil & wrap about 10 ft of duct tape around it.( million uses)  Something else I do is. Every thing that uses batteries uses AA. So Ive always got extra.     Jay
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I could like the wool pant idea for obvious warmth...however I would dislike wearing rainpants over them due to the noise they make walking through brush. I figgure the moisture wicking Cabelas MTP in medium and polar weight (as conditions dictate) with the dry plus pants or the sporthills, would work. Both the dry-plus pants as well as the sporthills are water and windproof and equally important to me - quite. I have wool for upper torso, but not lower as I like a maximum of two layers below the belt - one next to skin that is comfy, and one outer, wind/waterproof and quite. Three layers below the belt is too much IMO due to the bulk, primarly when walking . For upper torso, I'll go fleece, wool, and MT050 jacket for a total of three layers.

Esox - I sound like I have made up my mind on no wool below the belt, and that is because I worry about it itching. However, I would be interested in a few links to the wool pant you speak of. I have seen your gear links before and suspect you may have something good regarding this too. I'm sure it is something I am not familiar with indeed.

burntmuch - 10-4 on those small but important items. I totaly spaced off the mole skin. I do always bring duct tape rolled up on a twig, and forgot to add it to the list also. Yep, every single electronic device takes AA batteries. In fact, I only purchase gear made to take AA just for the obvious benefits you speak of, not to mention the simplicity.

You will probably want 1 spotting scope for every two people.  Also bring gun oil, things rust, even stainless rifles and ATS34 blade steel.  If you are hunting the first two weeks of Sept. in the lower half of Alaska you shouldn't need wool, never hunted north of the Yukon so I don't know how much colder it will be up there.  Consider an electic fence, they work at keeping the bears out of camp and away from your meat.  You can get a unit that runs off of 2 D cell batteries and is pretty light weight.  Run 2 lines, 1 a foot off the ground and 1 about 2-2.5 feet high, keeps sows and cubs out.

extra toilet paper...you can never have enough!! I would add an extensive first aid kit and a detailed first aid book, but preferably first aid training. As well, renting one of those personal locator beacons ( if possible), or a satellite phone could save someones life if you have a serious injury in the middle of nowhere.

Leave all that other stuff at home. All you really need other than your rifle and ammo, is a small roll of bailing wire, a roll of duct tape, and a pair of pliers. :)

Oh! And maybe a blanket.

Good luck. :D

See! You guys are starting to make it complicated again. I had him straitened out, and you guys are throwing technology back into the mix, and possibly confusing him again. Any great woodsman knows, you can fix or make anything with baling wire, duct tape, and pliers. ::)

I know it's too late now but you forgot one very important item.  One I nor any Alaskan won't be caught without.  Our Leatherman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I would bring a good flint/steel too, even teh best lighters will fail but steel wool or magnesium and flint always work.   I would also make sure you bring a suture kit or two along.   I always make sure I have a few, you can get them at farm stores in the large animal first aid section.   A small hemostate makes the sewing a log easier.  There is times when they will really save a life, another thing worth getting is the "blood stop"   large guase like wound packing that aids in blood clotting, there is another one that is like a foam/epoxy type stuff and another that is like a powder but I haven't used them.  I've had to sew myself up a couple of times while out in the bush, once when careless with a knife and another time from a fall on a beaver chewed sapling.  Not fun but glad I had the stuff there to do it.

Instead of wrapping your ducttape around a twig, wrap it around a flashlight or round waterbottle.  I do both... you can never have enough duct tape.  Makes a good handle on a small mag light.  ;D

That sounds like a big trip, you taking a track rig back there?  ;D ;D

bug dope / head net / pic coils / ascorbic or citric acid powder /other stuff
« Reply #13 on: December 21, 2007, 11:03:34 PM »
I don't know where the hunt was to take place in AK but here in Bristol Bay, you should plan on lots of bugs during the normal fall moose season.  Some times we get lucky with some early hard frosts but not often.  No-see-um and white sox (black flies) can be tough.  Each moose has its private cloud and they turn on you when moose is down.

Bug dope at least and many would love a good very fine mesh head net with hat that has enough brim to keep the net off your face.

For me, dope that has 25-35% DEET works good enough. I no longer like to use the full 100% DEET as it wrecks lots of plastics and I can't tell that it works a lot better.

I am happy with OFF and Cutter Brands,  have used some Ultrathon but don't recall that it was much better but it worked ok. Make sure to have plenty and it makes good fire starter too.

While butchering our moose this year we lit and set out the big Pic Sticks and it helped keep the bugs off. I like to break off a little chunk of coil and burn it in the tent after everyone is in to kill of the bugs and have a peaceful night.

I'm a believer in spraying the bags and meat with citric acid solution to slow spoilage. In my boat I carry a gallon of made up solution plus extra powder but if its a float trip powder and a spray bottle would be better.  I don't like the oil spray - makes the quarters too slippery to handle.  Indian Valley Meats near Anchorage sells Game Saver I think - google them.

A 12x16 or so plastic tarp to put over the meat is good - I like a white one to reflect the sun.  And I carry a couple little 8x10 for putting the meat on as we butcher.  These make good emergency shelters, tent flies too.

I don't like the weight of a cot or those heavy camp chairs. I do take a good Thermarest and one of those real cheap light wt folding Aluminum patio chairs with the plastic webbing if I have space.

What short of shelter will you have?
What will you carry your food in?  What about cook gear?

I've come to love the bear fence - bought one myself this fall.  Haven't put one to the test but know folks who have had good luck.  They can add weight.

Smart to stay with poly pro / synthetics and leave the cotton home.  Wool is ok, heavy when wet but the most fire resistant.

All I can think of tonight  - no wonder my boat is so heavy!!

Even with a troop of men carrying all that gear it will take quite a rig to get it all to the campsite.  I hope you have room for the moose meat and antlers on the return trip.  Have a great trip.
