« on: July 02, 2008, 11:25:11 AM »
Is the SS frame on the new Ultra 45/70 the 1st frame they have manufactured for the H&R/NEF firearms ? I know I have heard of and seen a few SS barrels with Nickel frames but was wonderong about the SS frames? Kurt

Yes, it's the first as stated on H&R's website, just for those Mississippians!! ;D

NEW Stainless Ultra Hunter with Thumbhole Stock

With the introduction of the Hornady LEVEREVOLUTION ammunition, the 45-70 Gov't cartridge has been revitalized. As a result, we have expanded the 45-70 lineup with a first-ever all stainless barrel and receiver, super deluxe 45-70 with a brown laminate thumbhole stock. This rifle comes equipped with a ballistic-enhancing 24" stainless steel heavy barrel to help with those longer than average shots.

Quick --- does this new SS 45-70 take somewhat higher pressure loadings ---- or what are they claiming as ballistically enhanced ??
Love my BC and I do appreciate it's longer bbl. Even though it's not a lot of velocity/ energy gain, added length is also a plus factor for those shooting with iron sights.

Curious -- Bob.   ???

Any late model SB2 framed H&R/NEF 45-70 will handle well into the ruger level loads since the same frame is on the .500S&W Handi with operating pressures well over 50kpsi and a case head that's larger than the 45-70 which equals more breech thrust. If you're a handloader, you can get some more velocity out of the extra 2" of barrel with the right powder, but nothing like the extra 10" of BC barrel, I get 150-200fps more with 350gr bullets and IMR 4198 or H322 with the BC barrel over the Handi barrel. Whether that extra velocity has any practical advantage and is worth the recoil is an entirely different matter!! ;D

One thing to note is that H&R has been making .45-70 barrels in house for the past few months, Tom the Quality manager, did alot of work on the tooling and process to make things work well, unfortunately he chose not to move to NY, I'm afraid that will be Remington's loss and will be happening many times over for others that made their products what we like. :'(

Tim, don't be down on us MS. guys we need all the help we can get down here, i know two years ago most of the 45-70's were coming here but now most all gun shop have them in stock, new and used, i read on a site last week that Louisiana had passed the same primitive firearms law we have here in MS., so i guess allot of the 45-70's will be going to LA.,this season if this is true. As far as the new s/s 45/70 i have been on a list with down payment for months i am yet to even see one of the s/s rifles and after all this sell-out and moving to N.Y. i may not get it before season.

I'm not down on MS, I appreciate the fact that H&R/Marlin made the SS 45-70 for that market, love mine, thanks for making it happen, we owe ya!! ;D As soon as Boyd's makes a bunch of stocks, you'll likely see some of em, the frames and barrels are all done, just waiting for t-hole stocks. :-\

Just got it Wednesday, haven't got a scope on it yet, I ordered some 300gr TSX flat base spitzers to load up some stout loads for it.  ;) I did a little stock swapping and put the stock that was on my 7x57 with the nice decelerator pad on it, the factory pad is a thin rubber Marlin pad, even with the t-hole, I don't think it would be adequate with hot 45-70 loads.

Same as always, black plastic TG and spacer. :-\ It has SS pins in the frame, but the trigger, hammer and barrel release are all blued/black.

Tim,
What kind of powder with that bullet?. 4198? I was thinking the same bullet with IMR 4198 starting around 53-54 grains.

H4198 is my favorite with 300gr bullets.
