Big-meplat bullet for .45 colt
« on: July 12, 2008, 08:34:19 PM »
Veral, I've been wondering if a big meplat of .400 or more would provide a significant killing advantage on medium game (deer and black bear) when put on a 300-340 grain bullet and driven to 1100-1200 fps?  This would be in comparison to the same weight bullet with the typical .340-.360 meplat.  I know the big meplat wouldn't fly as well beyond 100 yards, but I rarely ever shoot past that anyway.

You'll get the fastest kills when DV is held to not more than 130 maximum, with 125 being optimum max.  This is real easy with the WFN and it's .360 meplat, and the bullet is accurate.    Going heavier with wider meplat is not an advantage, but a disadvantage from several dirrections.  It will not be as accurate at any range, recoil will be far more punishing than with the above adaqute loading, and penetration will not be as straight with a wider meplat.

If you want to use the most pleasant to shoot load, with superb killing power in a 45 revolver, use my 300 gr WFN loaded to a mild 1200 fps.  Game up to large bear act like they have been hit by lightening with this power.

Hi Veral,

Would you recommend a gas check bullet or Plain Base if the velocity is being kept to 1200 fps?

Tom

IF the bore is smooth, plain base bullets are good to at least 1400 fps, and especially in a fixed barrel, which is a bit more forgiving than a wheel gun.
