Or-e-gun Bill: You are entirely right. So far, .338 Federal is a "boutique" round, headed, sadly, for the same fate as .358 Winchester. Sako and Ruger make bolt guns for it. The chances of Big Green making a rifle in this caliber are almost nil. Best bet for another factory bolt option in the near future would be a Savage 11. Savage isn't connected to any ammo maker, and it's just a matter of fitting a .338 Fed barrel to a short-action rifle with a standard bolt face. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, no other mods are necessary.
There is an article in the new Handloader magazine about E.R. Shaw's entry into complete rifles. They are producing a very reasonbly-priced bolt-action based on a slightly modified Savage action, RH or LH, a Shaw barrel, and a Boyd's laminated stock -- all more or less off-the-shelf items. The example in the article is a varmint rifle in .22-250 AI, but a quick look at the Shaw website lists .338 Federal and .338-'06 on the long list of available chamberings. The complete rifle isn't shown on the website yet, but I assume that conventional sporter stocks and barrel contours are available. Well worth an inquiry, if (like me) you can't afford to have a gunsmith make you an all-custom, handbuilt rifle.
