The 2008 Mossberg Leverguns Arrive !
« on: December 28, 2007, 07:46:12 AM »
I saw posted elsewhere, a reference to the Feb-Mar 2008 issue of Petersen's Hunting Magazine, where the "New For 2008" article supposedly said Mossberg is introducing (for the SHOT Show ?) a top-eject, tube-mag, lever action carbine.

It could be that they're itchin' for some of that Winchester 94 discretionary spending.   ;)

(EDIT: The new .3030 & .22 have hit their website, with specs/pics. The .30 is available now, the .22 in Fall 2008)

Mossberg used to make a 30-30 as Models 472, 479, and 679. I saw one in a pawnshop a year ago. Looked almost like a Marlin 336. So the name "Phoenix" seems like a bit of humor.

Does anyone have one of the earlier rifles?

I also saw that same article you referred to and am quite curious as to what the deal is. I had one of those Mossberg lever action rifles that I had taken in on trade +$$ from a buddy of mind. The rifle had a saddle ring on side of action and was a carbon copy of a Marlin 336.I do beleave these guns were made for Mossberg by Marlin.JC Penny, Montgomery Ward, and others had the same deal. Dont take my word on it but I think that was the case.I have a sneaking susspition that someone has picked up rights to the old Win.94 and may make them for Mossberg. We wont know until the 2008 Shot Show. :P

The older Mossberg leverguns, Model 472 et al, although superficially resembling Marlin 336's, were of a  different internal design.

Among other things, the older Mossberg's trigger traveled with the lever, ala Browning BLR, and the buttstock was held on via a throughbolt.

If Marlin had made them, Marlin sure wouldn't have changed the basic design of the trigger, just to put out a clone - they would have simply rebranded their own gun, like they did with the Glenfield for Montgomery Ward, Sears, and others.

Don't forget - They're in the gun business to make money for themselves, not waste it on a competitor.

Only a 2 year warranty. Is this gun imported? It doesn't look like the quality I expect from mossberg.

I saw a close-up pic of the action, with the bolt open.

Open top receiver, round bolt with angle-ejection, front & rear receiver rings D/T for scope mounts inline with the bore, tang safety, and the hammer cross-drilled & tapped for a stud-type offset hammer spur.  The buttstock had a rubber buttpad.

I looked at the pdf file but did not notie any mentioned as to when it would be expected to hit the shelves of my favorite firearms emporium. Any word on when it will start production and shipping to dealers?

it looks awesome to me! not saying that marlin make bad rifles, but I really prefer the classic look over the marlin look. the mossberg rifle looks like a prodigy winchester 94. hope it turns out to be of good quality, and is so, that it will stay around for years and be the resurrection of a new and improved lever action rifle era

I can only hope it's better than their other attempt.  I owned a 679, JUNK!  I paid $75 for it because the owner couldn't get a live round out of the chamber.  The lever was in the down position and the action was still closed.  Though it looked like a Marlin the quailty wasn't there.  It was sloppy, had a heavy trigger, the wood to metal fit was poor and it had real design/machining problems.  Mine had trouble with the elevator and though I bought a number of new parts to correct the problem we still had to fabricate parts to get it to work properly >:(  It was accurate but after all the work I put into it, I gave it away.

The latest issue of Shooting Times has an excellent article on it. They report that the bolt is rounded and is an different design from either the Win. 94 or the Marlin 336.  They reported excellent accuracy for a lever gun.

I saw that to.  My son took my copy but as I remember he didn't say anything about how the action felt or functioned nor about the trigger. ::)

It is pretty obvious to me that this new Mossberg is probably a clone of the Winchester 94, with the side loading gate, straight stock and top ejection, and it is probably filling a niche that doesn't exist.

This rifle in no way resembles nor is it competition for the Marlin 336.  A 336 has a Pistol Grip Butt Stock and has side ejection, two features that to me always made the 336 far superior to the Winchester 94.  I will not say that Marlin 336 shoots better than a Win 94 or this new Mossberg, but it has the features that I like better for ease of use.

IF Mossberg decides to make a .357 Mag, a 41 Mag, a 44 Mag, a .444, or a .45-70 out of this platform, then maybe Marlin could feel some competition for its straight stock Lever guns.

??? I am not in the market for a rifle much less for a 30-30 and much much less if it is an import. Should I ever want Lever Rifle again it would be a Marlin 336C in 35 Rem. as long as it still made in the USA

Did we ever even find out for sure if this gun was an import?  I personally already have a Marlin 336 so I don't really have need for another .30-30 lever gun, but I wouldn't mind knowing if Mossberg is outsourcing some of their production.
