I am considering saving and selling to acquire a GOOD flintlock long rifle and I am wondering what you all suggest and your experiences. Does anyone out there use a TVM rifle? How are they? I am not looking to spend a small fortune but I want to get a good hunting gun for the money, as well as something my kids would like to inherit. I want something at least semi custom.

Go for it!

I got a TVM Early Virginia. I love it.

Here's what I did:

I heard a few bad comments about TVM's stock flintlocks. So I had them put on a Jim Chambers Roundface lock. You can't get a better lock than a Chambers.

I had ignition problems with the stock TVM touch hole liner. I replaced this with a Chamber's White Lightning liner. I also reamed the hole with a 1/16" drill bit. That fixed it. Next time I'll have TVM put in the White Lightning liner from the get go.

These to tidbits won't cost but a few tens-of-dollars more but go a long, long way in the reliability of ignition.

TVM typically uses good barrels so you can expect good accuracy.

I requested a swamped barrel and got a Colerain.

My gun is everything I would ever want a flintlock to be. Accurate, reliable, easy to clean, and easy to find a load for. Puts almost anything I've put down it right where I aim.

The only thing I can't tell you is that it is durable and takes lots of abuse. But the reason is I've only had it for 3 years. So far, it looks like I will have the same things to say about it after 30 years.

One of my best friend's had a TVM and was quite satisfied with it. He bought one of the kits and did the work himself. I've heard good things about them but I've never shot one myself.

mr green jeans there are many companies out there tvm has excellent
made guns, they have them if memory serves in kit form, or semi custom stuff, or if your handy the track of the wolf sells kits, dixie gun works, muzzleloader supply, and early rustic arms they all have web sites and are available in kit form or 80- 90% complete you just sand and brown or blue your barrels and shoot just look around and ask questions and you should find the gun of your dreams.

I ordered a kit from them,,,,i told them what i wanted in a hunting rifle... When people hear that it was from a kit, they think it was an inexpensive gun.. I ordered a green mountian barrel, upgraded the wood, an L&R lock. I put lots of hours into this gun, and , BOY, does it shoot good, point exellent, and allways,, goes off if you know how to maintain the flint... I have about 550, to 600$ in this gun.... I ordered a complete gun from someone else, and it was unbeleivable poor quality,and it was 1200$..I told my self that i can do better than that myself,and so can you if you take your time,and read some books......I dont belive that there is a better gun kit for the price,and they will work with you....Good luck...Bruce/

I agree that Jim Chambers locks are excellent! Don't skimp on the lock or the barrel in whatever decision you make... Getz, Colerain, and Green Mountain come to mind, in barrels... Good shooting.
