Has anyone had experience hunting hogs with a un modified 303 british rifle and 180gr over the counter loads.

I've never used a 303 but I have killed hogs with a little bit of everything. The .303 cartridge with 180 grain soft point bullet is certainly powerful enough to take any hog you might run across. The only thing I would be concerned with is the accuracy of the rifle. If you can put the bullet within and inch of where you are aiming, at the range you will be shooting during hunting, I'd say go with the rifle. The one thing you don't want to "have to do" with a hog, regardless of the caliber, is shoot him a second time!

I have no problems with accuracy, I know it may be a personal issue but I shoot this rifle better than I can with any gun that has a scope. I have heard the the long barrels on the brit 303 heat up after two or three shots and the shot pattern is extermly different but i honestly have shot soda cans at 150 yrds standing w/ original steel sites and the gun is pretty consistant.(I know I know a soda can is alot easier that shooting a moving hog) i am just explaining the accuracy of the rifle. I have never shot a gun so stinking heavy but also it seems so accurate cause i know im not the best shot but i have kill alot of soda cans ad paper targets and the shot never changes. It drops one inch down and two the left at 150 yards everytime.Im scared to clean the thing cause i think i will mess it up.

Excuse me for not knowing the jargon on guns im still learning

303 is a hog hammer. my hunting buddy shoots one that has original barrel cut to 18'' a synthetic stock and a scope ( i would of preferred peep) it shave alot of weight is plenty accurate and blows BIG holes. if you dont mind the weight. you have a good hog rifle personally i get all snivelly over a heavy rifle i have to carry for several miles. i wish you could see my buddys it is nice and he lost no accuracy in professional chop job. however it does kick but thats the price for light gun

I believe you told me about your buddys gun it sound s nice, however mine belongs to me but its one of those things that i got from my uncle who bought it from a antique gun show. I dont know if it is worth anything but it was supposely used in wwII by a sniper. The only thing lacking is the bonet that my uncle took off and pitched because of the thought of it possiably being used to take another mans life(something different about the gun shooting a projectile and a blade disecting another human being)but I really like it and cant wait to line it up on a big one plus its long and heavy and has very little kick but im 6'3 and able to hold my own so it is not to bad to carry only when youo get in the thicket and vines thats when it has to stay home.

thats very understandable.if it needs a partner you can usually find them at gun shows for about 200already tricked out just something to ck into just for kicks, you might decide its a have to have if you like the round

my first true hog gun was a british 303 mark4* it would shout 2-3 inch groups at 100 open sighted and I used it to take at least 6 hogs when i lived in North Texas the 303 180 gr bullet at 2400fps in the remington Core-lokts hammered them hard and i had complete penetration on the hogs i shot the biggest was around 225 or so good luck and hope ya get a big one
