Handi 45/70 for black bear hunting
« on: July 28, 2008, 10:57:18 AM »
I have mounted a scope and sighted it in at 200 yards using 405 lead round nose flat points but every third to fourth shot at 200 yards I get a flier about 12'' high every time the first two to three Touching then one flier always high wait a few and it's good for two to three more. The barrel did not seem hot; everything is tight no Ideal why. has anybody ever seen this happen.

Thanks

Some guns do that but with 3 touching at 200yrds I would have little concern cause the bear is either gonna be long gone by #4 or rolling around on the ground laughing so hard that you ain't gonna get a clear 4th shot anyway  ;) In all reality getting a 3 shot group touching at 200yrds with a H&R Handi 45/70 is just about all anyone could really hopefore. That is better than anything I have ever heard I think the gun is good to go. Kurt

That's the truth.
Heck, I'd be happy if I could get 3 shots touching at 100yds...
Love that 45-70!

I agee with all the above. I was just curious, where are you hunting black bear at 200 yards?  Around here we either knock them out of a tree at 10 yards, or kill them over a bait pile inside of 50.  I can't say for sure now, because I just changed barrels, but my old .45-70 ejector would kill a bear at 300.  It was accurate and deadly at that distance.  When I work with this new extractor a while, I'll let you know

Those standard load factory 405 at 200 yards are pretty much out of breath when they get there. They wouldn't be my choice.
