S&W 586-7...What do I have??
« on: March 30, 2008, 05:57:02 PM »
I just recently got into the Smith revolvers, mainly because I turned 21 in January. My 21st birthday present to myself was a Model 29 .44 mag (being as Dirty Harry Callahan was my childhood hero). Saturday our local gun shop had a huge 3 day anniversary sale, Of course I went in to "look around" and found a beautiful S&W .357/.38 (Model 586-7). I did my part to stimulate the economy and brought it home. After doing a little research I discovered it was a limited run??? It's the seven shot, not the usual 6. Can anyone tell me anything about these "Limited Run 586-7's?"

Roughly how much am I looking at value wise? It came with the factory S&W combat grips, which are beautiful, as well as a set of Hogue monogrips, 2 speedloaders, box etc. There isnt a mark on the gun, I thought it was new! It only set me back $409.00...good deal?

You have a carbon steel .357 Mag revolver. The 686 is stainless steel, the 586 is carbon steel. Very fine revolver. It is an L-frame, meaning it is strong and durable for magnum loads. They can be found in a blued or nickle finish. Congrats......it should be a dandy!  And as far as collectors value, I have no idea. But the 586 has been discontinued for years but that does not necessarily mean it is worth a high price. If I found one in good condition I would go as high as $500 if it was in great condition. Just my opinions.

Hi , Mohawk.......speaking for Dakota, if I may...I think whats baffling him is according to the paperwork, this revolver was made in 2005 or 06 ,
also being a seven shot....somewhere he read it was  a run of 1000.  I believe the 686 was the only one of that "family" to have been made in a seven shot revolver.....Maybe mail Smith for a letter of authenticity ??  Thanks

Yeah, I would talk to S&W. The 586, to my knowledge, has not been produced in many years. That is strange. Even the carbon steel model 19 was discontinued in 2005. For a fee, you can download a historical trace on the gun by going to their website. Roy Jinks is their historian and a very nice man. A 7-shot should be a 686, not a 586. The only exception would be if was a "re-do" of the classic line they have now. If so it is a new production and is only worth market value. And if it was a limited special run I would doubt the seller would offer it at that price. Buyer beware........ If it is as he says, Good Job!!!! Please let us know. thanx.....

I ran the info. The 586 was discontinued in 1980. The link is above...

Mohawk ,  ...thats an interesting sight...good stuff.  As you said , appears the 586 was disc. in 80.  His actual model designation is 586-7 , least that's what it says inside the crane.  It came with the blue plastic box , paperwork , and 2 H/K speed-loaders , and the original grips. The original grips are a wood combat style grip , walnut I believe, with the S & W emblem of course.  It presently wears Hogue ( I think )  rubber finger groove style grips.   This is getting sort of interesting....I'm sure his revolver is newer than 80....as I said somewhere in his paperwork it says either 05 or 06....when did they go to the blue plastic boxes.....my older 686 came in a cardboard box. BTW the blue plastic box has the ser #, etc ,  on it....assume its original.  Thanks for the help , Mohawk ,  you've been very helpful.   Just thought of something else.....it has 2 keys with it, they fit in a small hole on the left side near the hammer , a type of security lock....where you can lock the hammer.  I'm sure that is a newer style gizmo .....thanks again.

I found some info online about it. Apparently S&W brought back the 586 in 2006. They produced 1000 with a 4 inch barrel, and 1000 with a 6 inch barrel. I'm going to try and find that link.

I still havn't found any "concrete" evidence, but from what I can find on the forums it looks like this was a limited run around 2006. I read one place only 100 were made, another site had 1000, and yet another suggested 5000. Might just have to call up S&W and find out for sure.

If the gun has the security lock it has to  be a recent make since the lock is a recent feature. Let us know what you find out.

It may have been a limited run for a major distributor.

The Smith 586 is a fine DA revolver, durable with heavy loads, and quick handling and well balanced in its 4 inch variant.  It however, was not discontinued in 1980, that is the year of introduction.  I have one from the first production run that has been fired many thousands of times, and is still the smoothest double action revolver I have ever shot.  I remember when the 7 shot variant came out, and I thought it was offered in both stainless and blued, but I could be wrong.

The 7 shot M586 is still being made BUT is offered in this configuration only.

I have a hard enough time counting to 6 let alone 7!

I also have several variants of the "L" frame revolver. They are a wonderful firearm and would last most folks a lifetime.
