Fitting a Barrel to the Reciever

I just bought a 25-06 barrel for a reciever I bought on the classifieds.  Actually I bought both on the classifieds.  The barrel fits on the reciever and locks up tight but when you hit the release and lower the barrel there is alot of slop (side to side).  Is this normal or do I need to send in the reciever and barrel and have them fitted?  If I do this what is the turnaround time?

 Westtexan, They will NOT fit a barrel to your action unless it is barrel sold with action.
 You are going to have do your fitting yourself.

Complete barrel fitting info can be found in the FAQs. There are other things to check besides how it locks up, headspace, barrel to frame gap and latch engagement, in that order. If it's lose ONLY when open, the spacer on wood forends can be shimmed to tighten it up. Sorry Marv, but The old H&R would fit a barrel IF they had enough underlug to cut it to fit, that would be if it wouldn't close all the way, if the underlug pivot is already too short they won't shim it. What they'll do under Remington's control is unknown. Westtexan, read the Accessory Barrel thread down the page or in the FAQs, turn around times stated by the current CS are mentioned by several members that have called CS.

TIM, HALPPP!  I'm wingin' this!  I think I would check head space first.  Just because it locks up, doesn't mean it is 100%.  Again, as Tim says, "Look at the FAQs"  It is all easy and all in there.  Pete

I checked the head space and a .0015 feeler guage is nice and snug.

See Forend Fit in the FAQs for help on shimming the spacer. If it's a syn stock it's not an easy fix.

Headspace is the gap from the headstamp of a chambered, sized case to the chamber mouth, plus the barrel to frame gap. You have to use a straight edge across the chamber mouth and measure the gap under it. That's detailed in barrel fitting.
