Swedish Mauser Barrel Twist?

I have a Husquerva M38.  Does anyone know what the barrel twist is for these rifles (I suspect it is around 1:8 or 8.5), but I am not sure.  Also, do the SAMCO replacement barrels have the same twist rate? 8)

Bucky,
If you have a good, solid one-piece cleaning rod that has the swival handle, you can test the twist by using a jag and tight patch.  Start the patch at the muzzle and mark the rod at the handle.  Now push the rod in until you get one-full revolution on the rod and place another mark on the rod at the muzzle.  You now measure the distance between marks and you know the twist distance for one revolution.

Just one little addition.....Make sure you measure the distance from the point of the jag to the mark on the rod for the correct rotation distance.

Sorry if I lead you astray there.  Should be as you say 8 to 8.5 inch twist.

Buckey,

According to the book I have "The Swedish Mauser Rifle" the twist rate for a M38 with either the 23.1" or 29.1" barrel would be 1:7.9

Hope this helps...

Got 3 of these myself and the 3rd one came to live at my house last Sunday and is a target model M96 with target sights.  Would like to find a nice M38.  Had a couple of leads but nothing yet..

Enjoy the rifle they shoot great..

I seem to remember an article stating that the m38 and m96 had different barrel twists - anyone know for sure  It seems to me that the m96 is the more accurate of the two

I would tend to agree that the M96 would be more accurate.  Additional barrel length offers a longer sighting plane with greater velocity, heavier barrel and stock, possibly greater stability as well.

Crow-Feather,

The book I have shows the same twist for the M96 & M38 regardless of barrel length.  Not to say that some weren't changed at some time but from the factory(s) it appears they were all 1:7.9.

And if they are not shot out they ARE accurate, at least the M96's are that I have and shoot.  Been talkin to some of the guys on the Swedish Mauser board at:
