No more Marlin bullseye
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:03:08 PM »
I knew it would be just a matter of time before Remington did something to screw up Marlins production or tradition. To help cut cost Reminton has decieded not no install the Marlin bullseye in the butt stock. I hope this is the only change Remington makes to Marlin firearms. Time will tell.

The Marlin bullseye appears to be a plastic plug used to fill a tooling hole in the stock much like the blank case head installed in the receiver of Remington 14 and 141 pump rifles.  It had no real purpose after manufacture but they had a hole that had to be camouflaged.

I would buy that except the only stocks that wear the bullseye are walnut stocks.  Hardwood stocks which need identical machining don't have the bullseye.

I don't think it served any real purpose.  But it is/was tradition and will be missed by some, thats for sure.

Your both correct in saying it serves no real function, but it has been a trademark for many years on Marlins walnut stocks.

I have it on good authority, that it's is not that Remington/Cerebus did not want to use the Marlin trademark "bullseye", but the trademark had to be purchased from the Kenna's, in order to use it.

You would think that something like that should be included with the sale of the company, but it was not.
Neither was the factory, or the land it sits on, included with the sale.

Go figure.

Well, that's what happens anytime somebody with a high-dollar education and a suit sticks his nose into the gun business.... you get "increased value" (AKA short-cuts in production for cheaper {for them, not you} guns).

I really hope that these clowns don't screw up Marlin.

Sorry fellas, All the guesses above are incorrect. The "bullseye" was not a trademark that had to be purchased from the Kennas. It was not meant as a "plug" to cover a hole but simply as a symbol of quality on the walnut stocked models. The factory, land etc. did convey with the sale. The bullseye being taken out of the stock was not a Remington or Cerberus idea but was decided by the same factory management that has been running the place for years. That little piece of plastic actually involved significant cost as all the stocks are hand sanded as a final procedure and it was not an easy task to keep it perfectly centered thus resulting in customer returns and rework.

The Bullseye was a symbol of the high quaility of marlin Barrel . not the walnut stock marlin used to make the barrels for the ballards before marlin took control of them and several other highpreformance rifles of the day

If Tomray says it's so, it's so. He should know what he's talking about. Thanks for clearing that up S.B.
