Forming the 22 Rem Jet
« on: July 13, 2008, 02:01:44 PM »
Well guys this is my latest project , forming 22 Remington Jet cases from 357 Mag brass . Most of the time jets are formed from 256 Win Mag brass but as I had none and did have a bunch of 357 mag along with a 100 357 Max oops from forming my 224GNR round this seemed like a fun little task .

Called a friend who by chance had a set of 357 mag to 256 win mag form dies for his TC along with a matching set of Rem Jet dies .

( L - R ) 357 Mag case - 22 REM JET case

As you can see from pic #2 it took a few steps to get from .356 down to .222 , 8 steps as a matter of fact ,.

Step 1 - FL size the 357 Mag cases

Step 2 - Annell the 357 cases

Step 3 - .356 to .316

Step 4 - .316 to .284

These 4 steps could be done lube free , after that the Imperial Sizing Wax comes into play big time .

Step 5 - .284 to .256

This covers the part to form a 256 Win Mag case .

Steps 6 & 7 - Once this is done , then comes the real fun , the formed cases are lubed well and ran up into the 22 Rem Jet FL Sizer , this can be done in one stroke but I found that the cases were starting to stick quite a bit , so I chose to do it in 2 diffrent operations , first running the case about 1/2 way into the die then removing the case , re-lubing , turning 180 and finishing it in a 2nd stroke .

Step 8 - At this point the cases are trimmed in a Forster trimmer set to max COL of 1.288 & Chamfered inside and out . After that I again run the finished case into the FL Sizer just to make sure the angle is in the proper place and its ready to load .

This has been a learning experience that believe it or not that I have enjoyed .  ;D

At this point I have my first 100 in the tumbler for final polishing and another 100 in the works of being formed .

Stimpy,

I know you like forming cases, but we sell the .22 Jet factory brass if you need it. Also, you know I'll be happy to anneal the brass for you in the machine anytime you want.

Ron

I think after this I'll be buying cases , this was fun to do just to see if I could do it , but the labor part is real time consuming . The best part was that I didn't loose the first case to neck fold which did suprise me , the  proper dies make a world of diffrence .

I may send you a few 100 of my 357 Max cases to do in the machine for forming up my 224GNR , even with the form dies I still loose about 10% due to hot spots from hand Annelling . After 1 firing I get split necks and the color is just not right around the split .  ;)

So expect a e-mail in the near furture . ;D
