IMR 4227 question New v. Old
« on: July 13, 2008, 02:46:17 PM »
I am almost finished with my last one pound can of IMR 4227 (plastic can like hodgdon) that I bought last summer.  A couple of month ago I bought of months ago I bought an eight pound can of IMR 4227 (also plastic).  When I opened the eight pounder the color was significantly different than the one pounder.  At first I thought that I might have one can of the old 4227 and one of the new.

What do you guys think.  Both cans are marked made in Canada packaged in the USA.  I thougt that the new IMR 4227 was being made in Australia.

Thanks

Chris

When I start with the eight pounder I am going to go back to my starting loads and check the velocity for comparison with the one pounder.

The one on the left is from the eight pound canister.

CP

The one on the left looks like the old H-4227 , they may have checked the burn rate and decided it was good enough to re-package as the IMR powder .

Not saying thats what you have  , just an idea .

Check the lot number and then goto the Hodgdon website and see if any recalls are listed for it.
I seem to remember that Hodgdon had a single lot of some powder that was mis-packaged.  I seem to recall that the powder that was in the cans was bullseye and that would cause very high pressure even with starting loads of the powder it was supposed to be.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

Heard thru the grapevine, and I make my living in the firearms industry, your going to see more company's eliminate/combine powders. Too many of them are to similar in burn rate. We will still have more choice's to stay confused, but don't be surprised in the next couple years some of them will be dropped.  gypsyman
