pt 99 af locking block broke
« on: August 01, 2008, 05:45:54 PM »
How often can I expect this to happen?? I have been doing some shooting with some friends and fired about 300 rounds thru it when things stopped quickly. The ear on the right broke off of the locking block. Ordered one thru numrich.........$50.00!!!!!!  Anyone know of issues with these?  Light loads would not cycle on the beginning load specs so I worked up to about 3/4 loads when the gun functioned reliably. It must have a stiffer spring in it. I bought this second hand but virtually new. So  the loads are not magnum to cause unnecessary stress.

Can't answer your question. I have a PT92 which is the same gun with fixed sights that I have fired a few hundred rounds thru with no problem except that it stovepipes the cheap Monarch (steel cased) 115 FMJ loads. It has never blinked with any other ammo. I did a lot of looking on posts on different forums for opinions on this gun before purchasing one. Probably 95% of the comments I found were positive and several preferred it over the Beretta 92 that they also owned. Since you bought it second hand could someone have fired some stiff handloads in it before you got ii and overstressed it?

Thanks for the reply. I do not think it had but one round fired in it. At least thats what the survivors family said. Supposedly he had just bought it and the one round used  in it was for himself when he caught his girlfriend with someone else!!! Other than some splatter in the evidence folder I recieved it in, the gun looked like showroom stuff. Even came with the new box of ammo minus the one round. If it had been fired more than that I did not see any sign of  it.

I read up on it as well and it does seem to be a dependable pistol. I have never had a hiccup until this happened. I am loading up another 1000 rounds and it will be tested thoroughly !!!!!!

I've owned a PT 99 for over 20 years and except for the white dots in the sights comming off I have had no problems with mine.  I probably have several thousand rounds through it.  I bought it initially due to its safety (I did not like the decocking lever on the Beretta) but find it a fine pistol that is very reliable.  I have shot mostly hand loads in mine without a single problem or jam that I can remember. ::)

I have a PT92 AF that had the same problem about 5 years ago.  The gun was fairly new, and Taurus says it has a lifetime warranty.  I called Taurus and they sent a new locking lug.  Put it in and it broke TOO!  After about 300 rounds.  Called Taurus again and they said send the pistol to them.  They replaced the locking lug and the barrel for free.  I have other Taurus pistols that have not had a problem, but now I am kind of leery of this gun.  Anyway don't spend money with anyone else, call Taurus!
