Tuffpak alternatives...
« on: July 24, 2008, 04:28:33 AM »
Are there any other offerings, a hard case for guns and gear,  or is it the one and only?  Maybe I am wrong but isn't it a lot of money for a tube case with a lock?

Thanks  Buckfever

I've used an ICC case for 15 years now flying to destinations all over the world, Africa on Average twice year and Alaska on average every year. My guns have never needed as much as a single click of scope adjustment in all this time.

The Tuff Pack is a TSA nightmare, good idea pre 9-11 but no longer any real advantage. We used to be able to pack 70lbs in a piece of luggage for international flights. Now it's only 50. When you could pack 70lbs and stuff in all your heavy clothing to protect your guns the Tuff pack was great. With TSA taking everything out to check them now, and they repack it for you........ it's a nightmare of them packing your things. I've seen the bolts of rifles nearly rub through the plastic when they are rubbing against it for 20hours on the flight, same with all the color rubbed off a scope rubbing against the sides. The hunters never packed them this way, the TSA repack did.

Today is different then the 90's with respect to firearm travel. You need to have the guns in a case with nothing else that can block, or other wise disable an x-ray from seeing exactly what is in there. Today you need a pad lock so that TSA can open-inspect-relock the case for you. The Tuffpack has an integral lock, if they want into the case you can kiss that integral lock goodbye! No how do you secure it?  I buy 5 keyed alike locks at ACE for 20 bucks. A spare is inside with the guns that is not snapped closed. There is a note with the lock that says

"If you found it necessary to cut off the lock to inspect this case, please use the spare here to secure the case again. Thanks for doing a great job with our safety"

I've had that spare lock used twice now, once in Houston, and again in Atlanta. Imagine if it were a Tuff Pak with integral locks! I only have two guns in my case, bolts removed lying next to the rifles, and a cleaning rod inside my gun case. Gone are the days when you could fill them with gear. Funny thing about this luggage and airtravel stuff. It's included in the price to have 2 pieces of luggage each one 50lbs. But you will pay dearly for a single piece that is 51lbs even if that is all you have. It's much cheaper to check two pieces now and take more stuff then just one that is even a pound over weight.
