Priming All Brass Hulls?
« on: February 20, 2008, 05:24:50 AM »
Do they make a tool for removing the primer and priming a new shot gun hull for reloading.  Was thinking about messing around with the brass hulls you can get, but did not want to have to buy a press for priming them.  Is there a tool just for this or a method?

for the brass 410 I use my nromal press

I have  a full set of LEE shell holders and one fits the 410 well (dont remember what one)  and  A Lee universal decapping die.

Check out Circle Fly Wads, they have links to outfits that make relatively inexpensive reloading "kits" for brass shotshells.

The initial question?

No; you don't need a lot of special tools, and most of them can be make-shift/expedient.

1. Depriming;   If you ever had an old LEE LOADER set, grab the de-priming punch.  If not stick a nail in a dowel.
2.  Repriming;  A metal surface and a hollow pointed punch.  Some use a deep-socket.  I use a 4" piece of copper plumbing.  You don't want to deform the primer pocket.  When you can, get an RCBS shellholder and reprime on an "O" press.
3. Powder and shot measures ;  Get a LEE scoop set. If you have a scale, and you should, you can make a set of measures from range pick-up shell casings
4.  seat wads with a dowel.
5. seal/secure the load with Elmers glue over the O/S card.

Circle Fly is your wad source, but a 3/4" punch and scrounged card stock can get you started.  (Picture frame shop card, cereal boxes, pulp egg cartons, waxed card milk boxes, cork gasket material.)

I use the RCBS shell holder that was 23 bucks to prime on my press, and a Lee mil primer remover that was only about 4 bucks at sportsmans

All good replies except that some brass hulls are Berdan primed.

I deprime the 410 shells with a 45/70 die, you have to raise it until it just pushes the primer out or it will deform the top of your shell.   The 45 colt shell holder works to reprime with a large pistol primer.  Berdan primers can be removed using hydraulic pressure.  Find or make a metal punch that is a close fit to the inside of the shell, fill with water, put it over a nut or what ever and smack the rod with a hammer.

The brass shells that are for sale as empties are not berdan primed, they are straight boxer primed. I have looked at them in 12 and 16 ga, and the others listed for sale state they are boxer primed.

I think some of the very first that were imported as loaded ammo were berdan, but none of the newer stuff I have seen is.

Now the main issue with these are they are meant for low power or black powder loads.
