375 Win in Contender
« on: July 18, 2008, 06:37:59 AM »
Howdy Everyone,
My boy has been shooting my 375 win in a marlin. It is his first year to get to hunt.
Anyway to make things easy on ammo supply I drug out my 375 contender barrel.
Has anyone here shot the 220 hornady bullet much in a 14 inch contender?
The 220 is working great in the marlin.

I've used the 220 gr. Hornady quite a bit in my 12" .375 JDJ @~ 2200 fps, which is faster than it will run out of a 14' .375 Win., by perhaps 150- 200 fps. It has worked very well for me on deer sized game, and although I don't own a .375 Win., it's the bullet I would try first in that cartridge.

Depending on your son's size, you may find the Sierra 200FN a better choice.  Recoil will be less of course, but it will aslo expand at slightly lower velocites than the Hornady bullet will.  This allows you to load it a bit lighter and still be effective on game.

Expect around 2050 fps with the 200, 1950 fps with the 220 in max loads out of 14" barrels.  At these velocities both bullets work fine.

Howdy
Boy is 8 years old,115 pounds not a small kid,
Went though hunter ed this years without any problems. His saying is Dad it is not just getting a deer or elk every year it is the fun of just getting to go hunting and see the the critters in the woods.
Has been shooting for 5 years now.Dad was doing it, so boy has seen shooting and reloading all his life.
We are up to 37gr of Rl-7 behind the hornady 220.Out of the marlin we get 1950fps.Hornady shows more fps out of thier Win Big Bore test gun.
Boys  says it has less recoil than 3inch slugs out of his Rem 870 20 ga.
Dad has not got around to shooting the load out of the 14 inch barrel yet.
It should have less recoil then my 358/444 or 45/70.

Expect better velocities with AA1680 than with RL-7.  Most references show at least 100 fps more with the Accurate powder.   My Ruger #3 loves AA1680 and 200 Sierras, 2470 fps and 2710 fpe (!).

Howdy
Thanks  Lone Star
I will check my powder box if I do not have any AA-1680
I can add it to my shopping  list with 200 Sierras.
