Help with loads for a new model blackhawk?
« on: July 22, 2008, 12:03:44 PM »
Hey guys, I just recently bought a used Ruger Blackhawk with a 4 5/8 barrel.  The gun was made in 1997, but it is in incredible shape.  I know the ruger's can take more pressure than the older colts and their replicas.  I have Hodgdon universal and green dot that I plan on using lighter loads .  Also I have Hodgdon 4227 for my heavier loads.  My heavy loads are gonna be either 250 gr. xtp or 300 gr. xtp, or a hard cast of the same weight.  Can any of you tell me of your experience with some of theise bullet weights with H4227.  Also have any of you chrony'd your blackhawks that have 4 5/8 barrels.  If not do any of you know about what the velocity loss is between a 4 5/8 barrel and a 7 1/2 barrel.  Thanks alot for all of your help.  You guys are a life saver.

cleveland48, Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors!

I really cant help you out much on the heavy loads (although I do use a 250 jacketed or 265 in hard cast) because most of my loads are light for deer only. I do pay attention though as there may be some hogs in my future.
I do like this site...
http://www.sixguns.com/

As John Taffin makes for an interesting read and covers all well. If you get there, just go to the Taffin Test on the home page and choose your caliber. You are also going to get some great replys right here. My main advice would be to stick with the published loads as said by the reloading manuals right down to the primer & bullet if you are going very hot at all.

With the bullet weights you named I assume your new Black Hawk is in .45 cal. Anyway, go to www.Hodgdon.com and use the data you get there.
