You can use 50 and 55-grain bullets in your 1:12" barrels just fine - although you could avoid boattailed 55-grain bullets.  Favorite loads for my now-gone 14" .223 were:

40-grain BTip - 22.0 grains of AA1680
50-grain V-Max -  27.5 grains of W748
55-grain BTip - 24.0 grains of AA2015 or 27.0 grains of W748

These were accurate loads that were under max in my T/C yet gave high velocities.

My current SST Super 14 .223 Remington Contender just loves 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded with 25.5grs. H-4895 (1/2 grain under Hodgdon's MAX as published on their web site) in Military LC Brass with Remington 7 1/2 Primers. With this load I get an average muzzle velocity of 2820 FPS from my 14" Contender and accuracy has been outstanding with most groups hovering around the 1/2 mark at 100 yards from the bench.

This load also shoots almost as good from my 1 in 9" Twist 16" Busmaster AR-15.
