Loads of deer in N. Carolina
« on: December 16, 2007, 01:29:51 PM »
Well, I finished up 6 days of hunting in N.Carolina. Filled all 6 tags. Killed 4 deer at 300+ yards including a buck @ 310yds and another @ 469 yds. I donated 5 of the deer to other hunters who weren't as lucky. Brought a nice bodied 7 pointer home for myself. I'm already booked for next year.

I like the Carolinas!

I started hunting in Oct so that I could try my hand @ muzzleloading. Then returned in Dec for 3 days to fill my remaining tags.

I was hunting on an 8,000 acre farm in the Roanoke River Belt area which is in the North-East quadrant about 40 minutes south of the Viriginia line.

NC is great to hunt.
I just came back from the Family farm over Christmas.
The licenses are reasonable and the game tags look like a shopping list.
Usually 5 to 6 deer.  some may be antlered, antler less, or optional ( OOPS!)
In the past you were able to shoot up to 2 a day.  I used to feed the Rugby team parties with a deer or two.
The deer are smaller than the deer in the North East but not by much.  My 8 pointer a few years ago was every bit as big as the 8 pointer dad shot in NY in the 60's if not bigger.
Back to the licenses.
You can get a full season $180 or a 6 Day small or big game license.  My small game this past trip with the water fowl stamp was $50.   I think the 6 day Big game license is $80 + other things like Black bear.  They run for 6 days on the calendar and your not allowed to hunt on Sunday.  The full license will allow you to return for Turkey season in April.
As for your smoke pole it is welcome for the regular gun season.  Hand guns and shotguns are also welcome.  The handgun has to have a minimum power and barrel length.  I think 357 and 5.5 inch and 6 inch for a .22.
As far as I can tell the Muzzle loader season is only open to residents as well as the bow season.  You can use a bow in gun season as well (Double Check it may have changed from when I last tried) but you have to wear the orange that all deer hunters wear.  And an orange Hat is mandatory!

As far as I can tell the Muzzle loader season is only open to residents This is not correct. Non-residents can hunt with a muzzleloader and I talked with many of them when I stopped by at the local gunshop. My buddies and I are all non-residents of NC, as were most of the other hunters that were hunting the same farm.

Non-resident license was $80 for a week or $115 (if I remember correctly) for the year. I'm sure that it wasn't $180. I opted for the annual license because I went twice during different times of the season.

I'm booked for November this coming season. Very interested to see what the rut will bring down in NC. :o

Varmint...Glad you had a good time down here...Sounds like you are hunting between Windsor and Williamston...That's only about a 45 minutes southwest of my families farms, plenty of deer down here...I ended up with 9 and from Thanksgiving until the last week, I hunted with my flinter and passed on several...

I think this year I will be leaving around April and stay to second week  in Nov:
I think the Early flintlock season starts in Oct:
I will purchase the full season tag just have to look into a club  or game lands to hunt
