Any opinions on the 44 special from carrying while hiking to hunting deer and hog size game?
I'm currently using a 45 colt, but I'm considering a FA 44 special. ( I do reload)

Sounds like you need a new gun
! With proper loads the 44spl will pretty much do anything the .45 Colt will do. When I read the title of your post I thought maybe you were looking for something a little more compact to carry than the .45, but the FA is not a small gun. Get the .44, and you can trade off on what you carry, the FA is always a good choice, and we all know there is no such thing as "Too Many" guns!!

It will do anything the .45 will do.... but the .45 will make a bigger hole.
I'd pick up a $300-$350 OM .357 and send it to Dave Clements or Andy Horvath and get myself a short barreled packin' .44spl. Horvath actually calls his the "Lil Ruger" and does his barrel at 4 inches with a rounded butt.

I have a nice 4 and 5/8" Cimarron in .44 Special. It's actually one of my more accurate single actions! It carries like a feather on the hip, points like a laser and there are no adjustable sights to worry about. A hard cast 240 grain bullet at 900 fps (my packing load) would satisfy 99% of any "gun" need that might arise. My plinking load shoots a bit higher on the target, so I know where to hold when fun and frolic are on the schedule.

the conversion cost alone could run +/- 500. to 1,200.00,depending on what you order.
shipping could be another consideration, and the length of time your gun is tied up
can be for a good amount of time. dan
