Anyone heard up coming coon prices?
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:37:22 AM »
There is a guy I work with came in this morning all excited. He heard from some country buyer coon will start at $10.00 in the round for our WI smalls. He's got a new coon hound and figures on cleaning up. I figure like other years I'll decide how much I trap as the season goes on. I've heard all the preseason hype to many times to bite.  Every since the last big boom in the 70's the markets done nothing but jump around. A guy can't get to excited till the auction gavel falls on your lot.

So what is the rumor mill saying??

My buyer(eastern WI)  told me when I sold my last coon in March, that "if nothing major happens" that green coon should open at $18-20 if good coon (not too many YOY, flat)

I doubt we will see over production of any species this year. gas prices are scaring a lot of trappers. I think we will see the shortest catch in a long ,long time. This should increase prices on most everything. My belief is that increased fur prices, will more than offset fuel cost increases. Those of us that hit it hard, should do very well.

My problem is going to be that the coon population got whacked here last year. My guess is that it was distemper. I haven't seen many small coon hit on the road this spring like usual, even the skunks seem to be gone. I know numbers where low on my line last fall and it was one of the reason I quit trapping early.
I'll have to get out early and do more than normal scouting. I here people talk of so many coon. I'm guess there are pockets out there where numbers are better. My guess is I'm going to have to search out those pockets and not just run my normal line. Just hope I can peice together something without alot of road gaps.

Mark, you may have to piece in spots, with other furbearers. Distemper also did away with most coon where I trap. Many other areas around the country have also been hit with ditemper, another reason I think coon prices will remain hot.

Tom
I started out as a fox trapper and switched to coon when my fox population crashed along with the price.  About the only thing I could plug in along my current line would be coyotes and in a couple spots a mink set or two. If I did run a mixed line I'd probably wait a week or so longer before I start too. The first week or so of my coon line was always run as a stand alone coon line. When the rest of the furbear seasons opened is when I usually mixed my line.
I'll have to think about rescheduling vacations to maximize what I can chase.
