revolver groups

A few Friends of mine were discussing scoping a revolver. What is the correct number of shots in a group to zero a Ruger blackhawk with a scope. Would it be 3 or 5 or 6? Need an experts opinion.

I am one who believes the more the more info it is talking. with a rifle it needs to be at least five. with a revolver you wont get the bug holes you do with a rifle so I shoot at least six then adjust my sights or scope to the center of that group. hope this is clearer then mud.

If the revolver holds 6 then fill it up! 22lr that holds 9?? I fill it up too.
When I shoot I am looking for honest results, not a small group that is a fluke. If I brag about the small size of a group I shot I want to be able to duplicate it in front of my shooting friends.
I also HATE the sound of a hammer falling on an empty cylinder.

in a revolver basicaly every time you line up another cylinder your shooting a different gun. the only way to tell what kind of groups your gun will shoot is to shoot each chamber so if it holds 6 you should shoot 6 shot groups.  I mark each chamber when i test a new gun and  check the target  each time so i know on paper if i have a bad chamber or an alignment problem. .

I like Lloyd Smale's explanation. Pistol or revolver I like to shoot what the gun will hold. Of course part of that is because I just like to shoot them.

Another example of determining what a revolver will do, is to mark each chamber, and shoot a 5 shot group with each chamber separately.  It will help you identify if you have a chamber that is a group spoiler.  That way, when hunting, you can leave that chamber empty, or align your cylinder so that your most accurate chamber will be the one that gets the first shot.

But, I've never gone to the extent that Lloyd has to determine each chambers individual accuracy potential - not because I wouldn't have, I just didn't know any better, so I was able only to see how the entire cylinder grouped; and since they all hit about where they were spoda, I wuz happy.  Mind ya'll tho, that revolver shot 200 yd metallic silly-wet with open sights so I felt comfy with it............ Mikey, if you had done the group shooting for each individual chamber you might have found one chamber that shot better than the others. You could have picked up a ram or two out at 200.

It is a (roulett) game for sure but I would always pay attention to where that first shot would go each time out to the range. Quite unscientific but I figure that I have fired enough shots that all six chambers have had their turn first in line and probably more than once. I would also check out the cold clean barrel verse the cold barrel with just a few fouling shots but really couldn't tell any diff.
The bottom line is that I can confidently load each chamber in the pre-dawn on opening morning of the season and not have to worry about it. I am good with all my centerfire revolvers but had a Cap n ball at one time with a chamber that was far enough out of whack and the (flyer) was obvious.
