WASHINGTON —

House leaders have agreed to allow a vote next month on a bill that would end local handgun control in the District of Columbia.

The measure was filed last week by several conservative Democrats, and supporters say it has a good chance of passing the House. Its prospects in the Senate are unclear.

The Supreme Court struck down the city's 32-year-old handgun ban in June. Since then, D.C. lawmakers have passed emergency legislation that maintains strict regulations.

The House bill seeks to eliminate those measures.

The legislation would allow D.C. residents to own handguns without registering them with police if they meet federal requirements for firearms ownership.

The bill also would end a requirement that owners keep their handguns unloaded and disassembled in their homes and would repeal the city's ban on most semiautomatic handguns.


If this passes both houses of Congress and is signed into law, I'll be greatly surprised by this anti gun controlled Congress, but I'm hopeful.

How is it that folks like these aren't afraid at all of defying the courts, but the good guys are scared to death of the courts.

billmac: Same reason the mayors of these Sanctuary Cities have the gall to defy Fed Law AND get away with it.  Why some members of Congress try slipping in Immigration laws that the public doesn't want and have been voted down several times.

NO consequences, that is why.

Residents of DC. should buy any and all handguns or long guns they want. The law is on the side of the people. Screw congress. This is the reason our forefathers gave us the second amendment. Vote out the tyrants.

I'm in agreement with you, but any action by Congress that removes any temptation by DC policitians to legislate gun control over its citizens is welcome.
