444 and 35 Rem Leverevolution
« on: July 19, 2008, 02:14:34 PM »
Ran some of both thru the paces today.  444 was in a 444P and a Handi.  35 was a 1957 model and it feed and shot them fine.  No problems with the last one feeding at all.  At 150 yds, the 444 was about the same POI as my handloads of 265g Hornady and a max charge of IMR3031.  The 35 rem shot about 5 " higher than the factory Rem 200g RN.  All 3 rifles shot as well or better than any other load I have tryed in them.  Will have to use some this hunting season.  DP.

I've been running the .35 Rem loads through my Marlin and it loves them.  Feeds fine and shoots as well as I can see through the peep sight.  I get them a dollar cheaper than the Remington Corelokts, so I see no reason to switch.

I like my 444s and its been out hunting a lot.  I load the 240jsp but i just purchased the 300gr lead and the 270gr jsp to test out.  After hearing what Mikey here said about his hog hunting with his 444(300gr's).  I hope Mikey chimes in.  He has a lot of experience with his 444. Its something that i want to take out and play with but times been the factor.

There's a nice article in the current Rifle magazine on the XLR and Leverevolution ammo, they used it in 30-30, 444 and 45-70s on a Texas hog hunt, they were impressed with its performance and accuracy.  ;)

As I've heard others say, the revolution rounds are actually a cure for a problem that never existed in the first place.  Tried some in the 444p and saw no increase in performance either accuracy wise or velocity.  Yes they worked but let's just say I wasn't overwhelmed.  Picked up a 300gr mold and had a sizer made and started casting my own.  My 444p has had nothing but a steady diet of 300gr. cast ever since and I forsee no possibility for change or even farther experimentation in the future.

If you handload and haven't yet tried casting you're missing out.  If you do cast your own an RD432-300 mold will have you kicking dirt at most anything else out there.

Really wish they would get the bullets on sale for us reloaders, I can't believe the prices of all the stuff anymore!  I know, not till they get the supply line built up. :(  DP

amen to that. Handloaders have been making the most revolutionary lever action rounds for many years. A hardcast flat nosed cast bullet is by far the best projectile you will find for any big bore lever gun.  To many people are looking for and buy snake oil. thats how the big manufactures work. they convince you that you need something you dont.

Did Marlin change the rate of twist in the 444? If I recall correctly( hmm that might be the problem) Hornady put out the 265 gr bullets saying that is as heavy a bullet that stabilizes properly.

Does the Handi have the same twist?

Current production 444 Handis are 1:20", same as Marlin. Old H&R Ultras were 1:38".

If you do not handload and the LE's are cheaper than corelockts (cheap) why not use them?

265gr. may or may not be the heaviest bullet to stabilize in that particular design.  I really don't know.  Keep in mind that twist rate is not determined by bullet weight but more-so by length of bearing surface and bullet design in the area of balance.  This is what makes the flat nosed 300gr. cast that was designed specifically for the 444 work so well.

That would be an issue in the old 1:38" barrels, but not in the 1:20", I've shot some nice 100yd groups in the .444 Handi with 355gr BTB cast bullets.
