Need a Bolt for the Stock
« on: July 09, 2008, 02:40:31 PM »
Need to find out what size the bolt that holds the stock on is or where I can get one.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The thread size is 3/8"-24 tpi. As for length, I think 1 1/4" will do it. Lowes or Home Depot will have one. It is simply a HHCS ( hex head cap screw).

The stock bolt as listed in the FAQ's is indeed a 3/8 -24 but is 4 inches long.hth  Doug

I picked up a couple from our local Mercantile farm store for about 60 cents apiece.  They were plated, so should be more rust resistant than the OEM.   Wish I'd have paid more attention to the FAQ about how to reinstall as I cross=threaded the original bolt.   Once I followed the instructions, it was simple.   Just natures way of correcting the grading curve..... They even had S/S and hex wrench versions, but that seemed an unwarranted expense.
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.

I've got a plastic stock that is a real bear to try and get the socket off when I tighten it down.  One of the hex heads would help that out alot.

Yeah, it's loads of fun when the socket gets stuck down in there and keeps pulling off the extension!  I don't know which is more entertaining, that or the Huntsman breech plug wrench.  A little design improvement could go a long way.

Good idea!  I wonder if just a little plain old gun oil would work or maybe reel lube?

An old mechanic's trick(thanks Grandpa!!) is to place a piece of plastic bag over the socket, then push the extension into the socket so the plastic creates a tight fit, it takes some serious pressure to remove it if the plastic is thick enough. ;) If you leave enough plastic bag when you trim it, it helps center the socket in the bolt hole on wood stocks too.

Having never had to remove a stock from a Handi rifle; a question.
If the recess is so tight that a socket gets stuck, does the flat washer stay in place or will it fall out when the bolt is removed?

The stuck socket happens on the synthetic stock, not a problem on wood stocks.  ;) Not all stocks have washers in them, some do, some don't. :-\ I use a metric washer, they have a small OD, but a 10mm hole.

Anyone hailed down the Snap On van and picked up a thinwall socket for this job?

A cheap 3/8" X 6 point socket, ground down a very small amount, or a hole saw [check the fit, or possibly a barrel-shaped rotary file [check that fit too] can relieve socket-wrench loss.  KODY

I ordered some 3/8 - 24 X 4" socket head cap bolts (Allen Head) from McMaster Carr and they are the cats meow in the plastic stocks.
