Wanted-paper patched bullets to try
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:11:40 AM »
I am getting interested in paper patch bullets to try in my 45-120 browning 1885 rifle.
This was a 45-70 and was re chambered to the 120....I am wondering if anyone has any extra bullets they
would be willing to sell me to try out..I hate to buy a mold and not like it..I am not sure  of what
dia. I need..I'm thinking perhaps .458-.460....I have not even shot this rifle yet,so this will be my
first testing with it..So if anyone is willing to sell me some,I would really appreciate it..Thanks,John

Well the barrel slugs at about .4585 inch....I have lyman molds for the grease groove bullets
such as 457125=500 grain-postel mold=537 grain-lee 500 grain mold...and the new one
that pedersoli was letting people use=500 grainer..

Yes,I plan on using black powder in it as in my 45-70

as I understand it the alloy makes no difference with paper patch..

velocity, will I am not sure what it will be....I have not shot this rifle yet and have never
tried a paper patch pill ....I want to try them out...so I figured if anyone was willing to sell
me a few all patched and ready,I would be set to experiment, before getting a mold...

Do I need to tell more? Thanks-John

Hello John...
I don't shoot Black.. Just PP smokeless...
I have a good friend that shoots PP Black in a Shiloh 45-70 with a .458 groove and a .450 bore...this is his formula ..
1. His wants his patched bullet to be .450 or bore dia.
2. Right now he is casting a LEE 500gr RN out of pure lead...
3. Then he runs the bullet thru a .457 or .458 Lee push thru sizer die..
4. Then thru a .451 Lee push thru
5. Then thru a custom .443 sizer die... Buckshot at www.castboolits.gunloads.com makes them cheaper and faster than Lee makes custom dies..
6. He then wraps the bullets 2 wraps with Buffalo Arms 100% cotton patch paper...he likes it the best
7. That brings the patched dia. up to .450
8. He loads it over a compressed load of black with a grease cookie under the bullet..
We took our PP loads out and shot them last Sunday on a old logging road and had a great time ... I was impressed how well his ole stinky loads shot...
Hope this info helps you on your way shooting PP...I am sure he would send you some bullets but as we live in Canada there would be problems shipping across the border...
Have fun John!
