2007 Black bear's age I took last year
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:54:29 AM »
I just got my card back from Ontario Canada, it is the card they send you with your bears age on it from a tooth submitted to there DNR.
My bear was 3 years old. That was the age my guide said it would be.

I got the same info back from New Brunswick DNR last month on the bear I took there in 2007. She was an "Old Crusty Huzzy" who had worn teeth and a saggy belly. Aged....16.5 years old!

around here, a three year old bear should be at least over the 200 mark.  i have seen cubs still with mama that were about 100.
o/t, but last year i was nose to nose with a bear that was at least 400, but i am guessing it was closer to five.  it looked like a four wheeler.  huge.  crease down the head and hardly any ears.  oh, and it's breathe wasnt so great, either.

Last year when I posted my pictures and story about my bear, you told me it was a cub and the outfitter was full of B.S, when he was telling us the bears were starving because of a berry frost kill. They depend on the berry crop to build up fat reserves.
Remember how I said the bear had no fat on it at all. When we skinned it out, the hide did not have any fat what so ever. That was when the Guide told us the bears we shot should of been in the 225 range. He was not blowing smoke up our back sides, just to make us feel better, he was actually concerned about how the bears would winter with no fat build up. After all he makes a living guiding bear hunts.

But you are right, they should of been over the 200 pound mark at 3 and 4 years old. My buddy that was with me, is my best friend and taxidermist, he said he never got a fall bear hide that did not have a lot of fat on it.

When you were face to face with that bear, was it bear season?

I am hoping for a big bear this year up in Maine. The outfitter has been e-mailing me with last years bear that did not get shot and sighting this year of some big black bears in his bait site areas. He is telling me of a few 400 pounder's, a 500 and one that might go 600, he calls him knot head. He said 2 bow hunter last year did not shoot him because they got so excited or something happened to where they could not even pull back there bows.

Needle to say, I am getting excited about the up coming hunt in August and my handguns are ready to go.

nope, it had just ended.   but for a few seconds i was worried it was myron season.  that was the only time that i thought i needed something bigger than a 28 gauge.   saw another bear this morning that was around 350.

Sounds like you are in bear country. 2 nice bears you saw. I have 2 bear that come to my land in West Virginia, they like to chew on my camper tire's and salt block cover.
I have bite impressions of 2 inch and one with 2 1/4 inches, that is canine to canine.

the only problem here is that it takes you ten years to get a tag.  i should be getting close to having enough points so either next year or the year after i should be bear hunting.

I hunted in Ontario last year and I didn't know you could send in a bear tooth to find out the age.  Then again I screwed up my shot and didn't get a bear.  Hopefully I'll redeem myself this year and actually get a bear.  Still debating on which gun though.

The guide I was with took the tooth and sent it in for us, as for your gun, take your 45-70.

myronman,
I hear you about waiting forever for Wi bear tags. I couldn't take it anymore and went to Minnesota last year on our first try. We did a DIY public land hunt and although unsuccessful we had bears on our baits. I'm a bit cash poor at the moment also for about 2 more years. I am going to Michigan's UP next year on 4 points and 2 years after that here in Wi. On limited funds one just has to be a bit more "creative" ;)

Redhawk1,

Hey, just wondering read where you said that you have a couple of bears coming to your land in west virginia .
Are you a resident of the state of West Virginia. I am and I am thinkng of going bear hunting a couple of days this year . what portion do you reside in the mountian portion or foothills . I live here in central west Virginia near Jacksons mill,Lewis county site of Gen. Stonewall Jacksons  boyhood home now owned by WVU. However my dad used to live in Tucker county and I got to do a lot of bear hunting up there for a couple of yrs. never got one have laid eyes on a few but always out of season. Hope to be able to bag one real soon as I am getting tired of dragging my wore out joints up and down those step mountians. I had a buddy that shot a 185 pound black bear a couple of yrs. ago and decided to keep the meat and dragged it of course in the snow for several miles said he was totally wore out fell asleep in the back seat of his car with the door open and the bear laying beside the car  and the dnr. woke him up and went through all of his paper work and gave him the fifth degree about going in alone among other things.Me and my brothers-brother-in Law are going to go no dogs of course but spot and stalk possible that is how my buddy eddie got his bear. holler back .

Stan, I live in Delaware but own 20 acres in West Virginia. My land is by Romney in Hampshire county. I am in the mountains, and I know what you mean about walking the mountains.
I wish WV would let us bait, I know for sure, I could get one or two to come in.

redhawk1,

Yes you are definantly in bear country I love it in the mountians I go there all the time. I have rented cabins multiple times in the canaan and seneca rocks areas . I have hunted dolly Sods wilderness(very step and rugged)  I have also hunted The Otter Creek wilderness not as step but rugged much better hunting then Dolly Sods due to trails not as step. Most bears killed in W.V. are in Randolph county and tucker county, but Raleigh and Kanawha and Braxton rank pretty high also . My county has also had a few in the last five yrs. killed also in the southern part around wildcat/walkersville . I was deer hunting in the edge of Braxton county off of three lick road and seen the biggest bear I ever layed eyes on in the wild I would estimate his weight around 400 plus pounds. He sounded like a herd of buffalo running through the woods then just sarted walking man I wished I would have seen him in bear season I could have busted him multiple times with my 460 encore real easy I would say about 50 to 70 yrds. Have you ever hunted in W.V. national forest areas for deer or bear??? Good luck hope you bag another one this time in W.V. they estimate our population of Bear to be in the neighborhood of 10,000-12,000 head. Dear to be in the area of 900,000 head.

I have only hunted deer and turkey so far. My wife and I are planning on building our second home on our land, and then I will be doing a lot of hunting in WV. I have only hunted on my land for the last 2 years.
