Remington 1888 single action 44-40 questions
« on: July 11, 2008, 05:26:16 AM »
I would like to see if anyone has any info on the Remington 1888 single action. I have one that was given to me by my dad. It has atleast 85% nickle finish, ivory grips that are numbered to the frame, load gate, and trigger guard (the barrel, and ejector rod housing have differant numbers).

My question is, is there a serial number range for either of the numbers for the 1888's?

Please email if you would like to convers about Remington single action revolvers.

I am also a Freedom Arms Collector.

The Remington M1875 single action revolvers are very collectible.  Even more collectible are the rare M1890 models, streamlind version of the M1875 to compete with Colt's M1873 revolvers.  I remember reading an article about how batches of nickel plated Remingtons were issued to the then new Indian Reservation Police, and how surviving samples now have collectors status.  The nickel plated finishes were very popular during the days of black powder ammunition because they withstood the ravages of corrosive residue much better than conventionally blued guns.

Try an Internet search for the Remington Collectors Association.  They would have complete serial number range data for your revolver.  Another source of info would the various authors of Remington firearms collectors books, also prominent in the RCA (surprise!)

Yeah, I'd love to correspond about Remingtons, although my current "collection" is only a pair of Uberti clones of the M1875 model in .45 Colt.  Ask me about Remington Rolling Blocks.  I am MAD  about them!

S.P. Fjestad in his Blue Book of Gun Values indicates that the Remington 1888 was never listed in a Remington catalog or price list but instead appeared in a Hartly Graham ad in late 1888.  The Model 1888 designation was created by collectors, not Remington.  It was made from parts of Model 1875 and 1890 revolvers.  Guess that would likely explain the different SNs.
