self defense loads for magnum revolvers
« on: July 04, 2008, 09:11:31 AM »
Dear Veral,
I appreciate this forum a lot.  I am a die hard handgun hunter, Concealed Carry instructor, and target shooter.  If you were concerned with deer, hogs, and, shall we say, two legged varmints, what one bullet would you focus on for A 6.5 inch 629 Smith and Wesson, and a Four inch model 19 Smith and wesson.  Social work would take precidence in importance.  I am personally not concerned with over penetration.  I would be much more worried about bullets a two legged varmint might spray around after being hit than the damage that (might) be done by a bullet that passed through a primary target. Low recoil is also somewhat of a priority, though not much of one.  I don't have as much trouble getting fast repeat shots with my .44 as some people seem to have with a .45. I do, however want my Smith and Wessons to last as long as possible.
I carry my .44 24/7, and I really want to get down to one caliber, one gun, one bullet, one load.  There is a good chance that if accuracy, recoil, second shot speed are good, I might get rid of my model 19, and my GLOCK 23.  I would then be down to a really good target 38 and a 22.  Can your bullets help, either to (slightly) reduce recoil in the 44, or greatly increase killing power in the 357?

Thank your for that entire first paragraph, and I hope every reader pays strict attention to every word.  In my not very humble opinion, I agree whole heartedly with your beliefs and desires.

For the 44, get a 280 gr WFN and load it to 1200 fps.  You'll never look back and the gun will last forever.  (Almost)  Loaded heavy, which would be loads over 1400 fps, recoil will be bothersome and the gun will shake apart quite rapidly, but the pressure will not hurt it, if one wants to use a a thousand or so stout loads, with the same bullet, in the guns lifetime.

If recoil is a bit to stiff with the 280 gr, go down to 260 gr, at the same velocity, which will give a noticably louder report and lesser recoil, but you won't see any difference on your largest target, four legged hogs, and definetely not on two legged hogs either.  If you ponder that last a minute or two, along with the reasons for having to defend ones self from them, the discription is near perfect as one can get without adding profanity, which doesn't really help the discription but only vents ones feelings a bit better.

I'd rather see her with a 44 mag and the above 1200 fps load, or even with a 240 gr at 1200 fps in the gun she carries.  But my wife carries a little 44 special loaded with the 280 gr WFN at 1100 fps.  That load because I loaded a lot of them quite a few years ago.  The little gun instead of a magnum, because she won't carry a heavier gun.--  I told her to never shoot it with that load unless she was in danger.  She did once though, and told be her arm and ears ached for a couple days.  I know she won't feel the recoil, nor lose her grip on the gun, and will wish the thing were banging twice as loud if she ever gets into a tight where she really needs defense.   The instructions I gave her, if she ever needs to use it on a two legged hog are.  Shoot till the hammer hits an empty primer, then, if in her car,  leave the area immediately with pedal to the metal, or come close as she can to that if on foot.

Thanks , Veral.  I will soon be ordering your book, and following the instructions about slugging cylinders, barrels, etc.  I am sick of ill fitting, out of round bullets that lead the barrel, and won't group better than four inches at 25 yards.  I have heard nothing but good about your bullet molds, and the killing power of large metplat bullets in general, and yours in particular.  You will be hearing from me soon as I can round up the scratch to make a purchase.

  Thank you.
Be aware that out of round bullets do not give leading problems unless they are out of round enough that they don't fill the bore around 100% of their bearing surface.  And if gas checked, that problem is partially reduced.  However, out of round is out of balance and out of balance is out of the group we want.
