What happens when the "system" fails
« on: May 09, 2008, 07:36:22 AM »
I just checked out the thread in Defense Weapons about what gun to have in a major emergency and it got me thinking.  If a major catastrophe happened how would you survive?  The countries infrastructure is in ruin.  Public utilities, water, gas, electricity aren't available.  The government isn't working, heck it barely functions now.  Nothing is being shipped, the only food available comes from local sources.  We can assume you have a house and some sort of firearm.  The situation will last an indefinite amount of time starting May.

RTQ, in my post I asked how YOU would survive, not what society's reaction to the situation would be.  And Shootall, I've read some of your posts, you love to type man.

I will do what ever it takes to stay alive ! It may mean being alone and trusting no one or banding together with others for protection and start a new system or restore the old one .In reality we will go back to food gatherers and hunters just on a more modern level  . As the only other choice is lay down and die !
And sometimes the one finger i type with gets tired !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

i have a water supply in my yard.  guns and ammo are covered.  food and heat are the wild cards right now, and i am working diligently on those two problems.   where i live,  food is essential all the time and heat is about 60% of the time.
i am not too worried about hordes overwhelming me.   my biggest concern is having enough to get my family through tough times when they come.  surely it is easier said than done.

for back up heat without wanting to install a wood burner of some type , why not the ol kerosane heaters , used ones sell around here 20-25 bucks , and it seems to me that kerosnae stays good to burn for a long time , fill up a 55 gal drum , sure that is goin cost but how far would that get you? and compared to wood/woodburner may be an option if your only looking to heat for a period of time

I live in a small mountain community near Bakersfield, California.

I believe my community would probably band together in case of "attack" from outside.

But I think people in cities would stay there. Look what happened after Katrina.

And I don't buy into racist fears about hordes of people of color trying break down my door.

It could actually create a new type of society with more people working together.

Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Peace,

Frank

true that, many people of the city would stay in the city until they die, if for nothing else than the "fear of the great unknown". however hunger does funny things to people and one of the things it does is motivate them to find food.doesnt matter what color they are, if they are hungry enuf, they will commit crimes to alleviate their hunger.just like yu or i or anyone would do.now maybe yu or i would head into a wilderness area where we know food is abundant. where do people who have no knowledge of the abundance of nature go to find food?WAL MART lol, stay out of the vicinity of any WAL MARTS and yull be ok

anarchy within 72 hrs after the power grid fails

If it was a major catastrophe that impacted the entire world or most populated parts of it, you can bet the anarchy would start long before the 72 hrs.  People would wait a short whilie for the government to act until they realize there is no more government anywhere.  Then the s*** hits the fan.  Thankfully, I live extremely remote, with plenty of hand tools including axes, picks, and saws.  Medical books and natural medicines for quite a few illnesses, lots of black bears to render fat, salmon, seafood, and deer.  A couple of small rowing skiffs with oars and plenty of clothing to last my lifetime, about 25 years.  Lots of boots and leather can be tanned.  Enough ammo components used with care to take care of hunting and protection purposes.  It still would be extremely difficult, but could last many years without civilization of any type.  Not that I would want too, but do have the supplies, tools, and experience on hand.  I pity those not so fortunate.
Greg lost his battle with cancer last week on April 2nd 2009. RIP Greg. We miss you.

Hillbill,

I might head to WalMart myself before its all over! LOL. Thank God for Walmart! LOL.

Specially if my macho survival fantasies turn out to be just that, and I realize when all the food's gone from the pantry and the garden, and all the game is chased away or shot out, that I'm as helpless as those dazed city hordes staggering about sniffing out food.

But yes, you're right, i think many city people would eventually wander into my valley.

But frankly, I worry more about the guy next door. He's got a whole lot more money than I do and he's stealing my freakin garden tools, for crying out loud.

If he's petty thievin' from me now, what do you think, he would be doing when/if the s---- hits the fan!

Yikes!

Beam me up Scotty,

Kernman
