off set scope mount?
« on: July 31, 2008, 02:07:00 PM »
Hello all. Just wanted to say great forum, and ask a quick question. I have a .243 youth handi that i bought used, in great shape, last spring.  Serial #HX-239*** My kid has been shooting it a bit, but no real accuracy tests have been done. He can hit a small kill zone i set up for him at 200 yards with a 4X39 scope on it. I would say this to be roughly equal to him shooting 6"-7" groups at that range.

Well I've since noticed that the scope rail is off center to the right, from the top of the barrel. Don't know how I missed it when I bought it, but I did. So my question is can I fill the holes and re-drill and tap a mount back on straight?  Or will this weaken the chamber area too much? I don't want to shim it, in fact I don't think it could be shimmed as it's that far off. Very noticeable. The boy can shoot ok with it so it is functional as is. But this gun is driving me nuts when I look at it. Guess I know now why it was in the used rack huh?  ::)

I'd just like to figure this out before we spend any more money on ammo and give a more thorough test for deer season this year. If it's not worth it I'll start looking for a 20 gauge slug barrel to fit the frame.  Thanks.

If it's off center, it should be fixed right, either by a gunsmith or H&R, even tho it's functional I'd get it fixed, the light contour barrel is hard enough to deal with without complications. I don't think the mount holes are deep enough to cause an issue, but that would be something a gunsmith should decide, H&R would likely replace the barrel if they are too deep and new holes would cause an issue, the old holes are likely too close to allow new holes, so a base will have to be modified in addition to the additional mount holes being made.  :-\

Just fill the old holes with plugs, move the scope base forward about 1/4 inch, use some super glue to glue it exactly centered and then, using a drill press with a drill that just fits the holes in the scope base clear hole, mark the holes to drill and tap.  Now just give the base a sharp rap with a small hammer and pop it off.  Drill and tap new holes and you are good to go.  This is the process I use to drill and tap the shotgun stubs I use on the stubbing projects, it results in holes exactly matching the scope base.  You will never miss the 1/4 inch of eye relief.  Larry

Try a set of windage adjustable scope mounts such as Millett

If you have a drill press and are handy with tools, and done this kind of thing before, take trotterlg's suggestion.  If not send it back to H&R or take it to a gunsmith.  A good competent machinist can also do a good job.

Thanks for the replies. I took it to the smith and he said it wouldn't be a problem to re-drill and tap. But he also recommended that I just put a scope back on it and do a thorough accuracy test. If it's functional just let it be. I understand what he's saying but it isn't his gun that he has to look at and see a crooked scope.

So I'm taking his advice to see what I get out of it. I'm sure I'll do the job myself in early sept.. Thanks trotter, I'll use your trick when I do.

Also can you guys recommend a laser bore sighter? I can see it's time I bought one.

I use the Cabela's laser bore sighter, works real well, I'm usually on paper at 100yds.  ;)

If I caught something like that at purchase or right after I would send it in for correction. Having had and shot the gun for a while however and finding no fault in its accuracy or function, I would leave well enough alone. It'll have charactor all its own.

Have you made certain the chamber and bore centerline match the screw hole centerline? If they match now, moving the screw hole centerline to match the barrel contour will create real problems. Follow the gunsmith's advice and ignore cosmetics or send it back for a factory service. ::)

Gotta agree with Tim on this one and send it back into H&R to get fixed the right way.
