This is the most visible, dynamic update Map Source I am aware of on the computer screen. This free Garmin Upgrade was released in Non-Beta form on July 18, 2008. When I downloaded it to my computer my older US Topo software took on a new life.
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209On my computer screen roads that had just been a black line, became a road. Numerous other improvements to the maps are visible. I am amazed that this upgrade is free. I guess that Garmin had to do it to support its newer generation of gps units. But us old guys benefit.
I quickly transferred a map selection to a 2GB micro SD card and loaded into my Garmin 76Cx. I load the card to 1.8 MB of maps from US Topo, and City Navigator on the card and it functioned without a problem. The maps appear sharper on the gps screen but the major improvements are not showing up on the gps screen.
I was hoping that this update would clear up the problem I am having with the Rino 530HCx. This unit refuses to recognize a full load of topo maps that my Garmin 76Cx does. I have invested time and money trying to over come this problem and have not been able to resolve it. Garmin support even sent me a second 530HCx and the problem repeats itself in the second unit. I have been busy working, but when I have time I will document my efforts and send it to Garmin Support to see if the issue can be resolved. But I may change my handle to frustrated. I can get the unit to work fine with 95MB of maps, which cover Southern Oregon, a strip of NV, a full load of Arizona.
I am totally impressed with 6.14.1; it puts new life into old software. Computer maps look good.
Give it try.
